Joined by Nancy Reagan, President Obama signed into law the Ronald Reagan Centennial Commission Act at the White House on Tuesday. The act creates a commission to plan the celebration of former president Ronald Reagan's 100th birthday in February of 2011.

This must be one of the priorities that's keeping Obama so busy he can't get around to repealing DADT and DOMA.

How fitting at the beginning of Gay Pride Month, it's a birthday party for the President who let our friends and lovers die of AIDS while he refused to say or do anything about it.

You may have this wrong Captain, I think the conservatives will be shocked that Obama touched their Queen Nancy. Did Nancy accompany Ronnie to Philadelphia, Mississippi to kick off the Reagan campaign and tout "States Rights"?

Nick-Obama is not the only Democrat in Washington, perhaps you could ask one of your esteemed Senators or Congressman to introduce a bill to repeal DADT & DOMA.

Could be he made promises he knew he couldn't keep....?
Could be he is taking his time so it is done right, and he wants congressional involvement so it is a full fledged law?

Food for thought.

We have.

It's more complicated than that, we need Obama to be assertive in his commitment and fully on board with the Pentagon and a plan.

Here's a pretty succinct report of where we are:

Activists see window closing for gays in the military

Gay-rights activists are pressing the White House to align Pentagon leaders with President Obama’s goal to repeal a controversial ban on gays serving openly in the military.

The push comes amid growing anxiety that Obama only has a short window to charge ahead with the repeal of the controversial Clinton-era policy before his attention switches to campaigning for a second term.

Congress would have to write legislation to repeal the ban, which means that Obama would have to start engaging lawmakers over the coming months for legislation to be written and passed by the end of 2010. ...

Whatever became of our esteemed elders, the ones who saved The Gay World as we once knew it? Perhaps these so-called former "gay rights leaders" can take up the mantle of "CHANGE" again (and re-establish a connection to their youth and all their youthful accomplishments as a side benefit.)

Wouldn't that be nice? Wouldn't it be commendable if, rather than ranting like a crazy old aunt in an attic, someone took up the cause (cause I'm tired of hearing the crazy aunt)?

Some of us have taken up the cause as a matter of fact.

There's a decent amount of backing in Congress but all roads lead to the White House and where we keep hitting a roadblock is with Obama.

Or it could be that he doesn't have the authority to do so. #-o

He's the Commander in Chief and the President.

Without a strong push from the White House, Congress can't get this done and the Pentagon won't. The Pentagon's involvement is critical because a plan has to be developed to make this happen.

There's a reason that the Presidential candidate promising to repeal DADT and DOMA meant something - this needs to come from the White House. It's very interesting that Obama supporters keep defending Obama's failure to keep his promise.

Gag me.

I think more highly of Reagan than most folks here, but I find this ridiculous! They named an aircraft carrier and other things after him already, and now we celebrate his hundredth birthday??? The man wasn't a saint, after all.

Congress is involved and some members are working to push through The Military Readiness Enhancement Act again.

And who's doing it? A Democratic President who's dealing with an economic crisis that can be traced back to Reagan's policies. But he's the same Democrat who heralded Reagan over Democratic President Clinton during the Democratic Primaries.

Therefore this nonsense is no surprise.

Without a strong push from the White House

If Obama started making a serious push for gay rights right now (repealing DOMA etc), he would be lampooned for misplaced priorities and perhaps rightly so. When the economic issues are fixed (still got a ways to go there) there will be plenty of time for that.

So he should have told Congress they were wasting time with this.

I thought he died.

Perhaps rightly so??

Anybody who thinks their own equal rights is a "misplaced priority" at any time is not serious about equal rights.

Hillary Clinton is doing it at State while handling important foreign affairs. One task doesn't have to supercede others.

Oh man.

You sound like you're talking about waiting for Mom to fix a broken chair before you get to go play in the park.

"The economic issues" are not going to be fixed in "plenty of time" to repeal DADT and DOMA. The notion is absurd on so many levels.

It's nice that we have a young man with some brains and common sense in this forum. Of course Obama has huge priorities and if he is to address gay rights and any other issue he must maximize his support.

I tend to think gay rights issues are virtually a fate accomplice anyway and I'm content to allow Obama to address Iraq, Afghanistan, the economic crisis, Pakistan, North Korea, Iran and the Middle East and a few other pressing problems while some rights issues sit on the back burner.

I realize that Alfie is uncharacteristically in a hurry to exchange his summer whites for a long white bridal train and Nick has become like a Black Panther Mau Mauing gay rights, but I am content to take the long MLK road and am confident that 4 or 8 years from now many of our goals will be met.

I've said it before and will say it again.

Gay rights are serious to me, but not as serious as keeping my job.

I may need full equal rights to be completely happy, but I need money to live and I'll take that first.

Do you know how lomg it took for Blacks just to be able to get served at Woolworths? I'm beginning to sound like old Uncle Tommasina here, but no President is going to solve all our problems immediately and a realistic approach will produce a better outcome in the long run.

The greater good is also a consideration here. Try and be more Bogart in Cassablanca and a little less Joan Crawford in Mommie Dearest.

Indeed, a preemptive declaration that "I am Obama and from now on gays are equal" that some people seem to want is likely to produce a backlash that will result in even more opposition.

A permanent solution will need a gradual approach that brings additional popular acceptance. That's already happening at the state level and having success.
