Altho these articles appeared a few years ago, something I just discovered was how Ayn Rand, who is hero worshipped by many right wing republican conservatives, was a big fan of serial killer William Hickman.

Rand wrote about what she admired most about Hickman was his sociopathic qualities. She said:

"Other people do not exist for him, and he does not see why they should," she wrote, gushing that Hickman had "no regard whatsoever for all that society holds sacred, and with a consciousness all his own. He has the true, innate psychology of a Superman. He can never realize and feel 'other people.'"

Admirers of Ayn Rand are Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, Rush Limbaugh, S C Governor Mark Sanford and Paul Ryan.

This explains alot about the sociopathetic leanings of republicans. Following Ayn Rand's philosophy they have little regard for human life but their own. This explains a lot why Paul Ryan's budgets are they way they are. :##:

There are many people politicians can and should hero worship..... Ghandi, Mother Teresa, Nelson Mandela are three better examples.

Ayn Rand seems like a sociopath to me...as do so many of the people who admire her. It makes sense that she would idolize the guy.

Rand was one of the nuttiest cunts to prove P. T. Barnum right in the 20th century. Hitler was another.

Not sure mother teresa is exactly the best alternative. Princess Diana was actually more useful in raising money, easing suffering, and ending stigma.

oh alternet

her philosophy is so terrible on its own, I don't feel like it really requires digging through diary entries she wrote as a poor, unemployed 20-something immigrant who'd only been in the US for a year to disparage it even more.

I find it interesting that most people don't debunk Ayn Rand, they just profess their dislike.

I don't think most people think all that deeply or academically about a particular idea before deciding whether or not to embrace it. But at the same time, I've never felt a personal need to go and "debunk" her. Her philosophy rests on a foundation of perspectives and assumptions that I have never shared.

There are aspects of Objectivism which I admire, but much like any 'pure' philosophy it utterly falls apart once you add living breathing people to the mix.

I just love reminding Randroids that their idol died alone and in poverty, suckling at the teat of the safety net she so despised.

It is because we've all previously debunked it. It is a hollow man, a straw man ;philosophy'. Rand herself has been exposed as a greedy, sad character who ended up on medical welfare in her last years. Her personal life is a stark contradiction to her own 'philosophical' positions. She was a charlatan who found just the right ipsum lorem to appeal to the self-obsessed, infantile socipaths who only needed someone to write their version of a bible for them.

And the purpose of this thread is ....?

Read:

Whenever you hear politicians or Tea Partiers dividing up the world between "producers" and "collectivism," just know that those ideas and words more likely than not are derived from the deranged mind of a serial-killer groupie. When you hear them saying, "Go John Galt," hide your daughters and tell them not to talk to any strangers -- or Tea Party Republicans. And when you see them taking their razor blades to the last remaining programs protecting the middle class from total abject destitution -- Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid -- and bragging about how they are slashing these programs for "moral" reasons, just remember Ayn's morality and who inspired her.

Too many critics of Ayn Rand -- until recently I was one of them -- would rather dismiss her books and ideas as laughable, childish, and hackneyed. But she can't be dismissed because Rand is the name that keeps bubbling up from the Tea Party crowd and the elite conservative circuit in Washington as the Big Inspiration. The only way to protect ourselves from this thinking is the way you protect yourself from serial killers: smoke the Rand followers out, make them answer for following the crazed ideology of a serial-killer-groupie, and run them the hell out of town and out of our hemisphere.

People should know the depth of her depravity. Her "thought" is a cancer eating at the vitals of the Republic.

My opinion of Ayn Rand is she was a Russian spy sent to destroy America from within by inspiring us to adopt a philosophy that would inevitably lead to a Marxist state. Thankfully she failed.

A thought: this gives an interesting take on the title "Objectivism" for her "philosophy": it seems to refer more of how to treat other humans, i.e. as objects, than on how to think.
