On-Topic Republicans Want to Rig Presidential Elections

chance1, you are off topic.

This thread is about Virginia's Gerrymandering plan where districts would be awarded by majority vote as points to the electoral college. It has nothing to do with one vote counting equally amongst others in the state.

Me off topic ?

Impossible ;)

out of the last 6 presidential elections, republicans have only won one of those with popular support.

Democrats 5 Republicans 1

That's a losing record for a losing party.

too bad for republicans, and good for our country, is all they can do is imagine scenarios in which the American people would support their warped agenda.

Doesn't this Repugnantan plan, if adopted by all fifty states, BASICALLY say: "The President and the House of Representatives will ALWAYS be the same Political Party"??????? Whatever Party has the majority in the House, will guarantee that the President is from the SAME Party.

I wonder if there's a way to challenge this under some "BALANCE OF POWERS" scenario. Are there any Constitutional scholars in here who might want to tackle this?

In fact, I have just sent an email (which I will also send as an actual letter via mail) to the U. S. Department of Justice. I can't believe that I would be the first person to question it as an issue with the Balance of Powers, nor whether it's even a valid premise or not, but it doesn't hurt to try.

If you can't win,cheat.

Republicans realize they can't win an election honestly, so they need to change how elections are held for a chance to win.

Voter suppression and gerrymandering and their latest tools.

What I saw a political commentator saying shortly after Obama won on election night has always stuck in my head. He said "If you run a campaign based around a platform of taking millions of people in this country, and making their lives as unpleasant as humanly possible, so much so that they'll want to leave the country voluntarily, oddly enough, none of those people want to vote for you."

My state voted 64% to preserve Maryland's extremely gerrymandered Congressional districts.

Maryland has some bad gerrymandered districts. Specifically MD-5, taking all of Southern Maryland with portions of Anne Arundel and PG, to create a super D+11 for Steny "tax tax, spend spend liberal" Hoyer to stay in office forever. He is a reason why we need term limits for all politicians

Maryland is carried by only a few, albeit populous areas, if you look at the county by county (not district) breakdown, then you can see how each county votes. Calvert County, my home, is more favorably Republican.

If so then they wouldn't need to gerrymander Maryland. District 5 is set up to actually silence southern Maryland, specifically Calvert county.

Calvert was once much more Democratic but swung around

I was just saying that if you look county by county you get a different look at how the votes come in. Look at a blue/red state county by county and you can see that just a few counties can carry the whole state. Interesting.

Dem's gerrymander congressional districts also -- but it doesn't make it right that republicans do it too.

It's time for the process of gerrymandering to stop. It's not good for the people involved.

I am now separated from my form district and live in a long thin line that encompasses 2 miles on either side of a highway for many miles. The lines were drawn by a republican state legislature with the assistance of my former congressman -- Emmanuel Cleaver. I'm not sure what the republican legislature got out of the deal -- Cleaver probably would have lost if the district was drawn to reflect a more county by county alignment.

Gerrymandering is wrong. Look at what Virginia did. Bob McDonnell (you remember.... the guy who wants to stick ultrasound wands up women's vaginas before they can exercise one of their constitutional rights) said it was a bad thing to do but did he say he was going to veto it? I'll bet you he won't. Someone else did he dirty work for him.

If the gerry mandering process were to stop, Texas would become a democrat leaning state. So lets not kid ourselves... some here wouldn't be in favor of it. If it were to stop, this country as a whole would suddenly be more blue leaning.

If Texas switches to blue it's a death knell for today's GOP party. It will have to massively reinvent itself or set off a nuke in the U.S. and frame it on Democrats or something to win an election legitimately again.

Don't give them any ideas. I'm sure they thought of something along these lines but first they have to make sure their 1% owners have left the area for their villas overseas

If the republicans were to stop voter suppression in Florida and Ohio those states too would be further out of their reach. They tried so hard to rig Florida's election and it still went to Obama by nearly 90,000 votes (if I recall right).

Strategy for winning in 2016: block 90,001 voter registrations in Democratic districts in Florida! Our message wasn't to blame!

No, not in the least.

Democrats won the popular vote in 2000 but lost the electoral college vote to the Republican candidate.

Democrats did not respond by attempting to rig the electoral process so that they might win future elections, even if a majority of the voters should cast their ballots for the other party.

Yes, they did. There were similar schemes to award electoral votes using a variety of different methods, which, had they been in affect during 2000, would have led to a Gore win. Those proposals, like these ones here, went no where.

The Virginia scheme is not an attempt to "fix" any problems with the electoral college. It is an attempt by Republicans to steal offices they cannot win with votes. Democrats have not tried to discourage Republicans from voting, have not tried to reduce voting hours in Republican areas but not Democratic, and have not tried to make the votes of Republicans count less than those of Democrats.

This is not a bipartisan tyranny. It is Republican and Republican alone.

Both parties have done it after stinging losses. Learn your history.

doesn't make both parties equally culpable for voter supression.

more false equivalencies from a party full of excuses.
