New Line is in talks with horror production company Platinum Dunes to re-launch the "Nightmare on Elm Street" movie series, the franchise that helped establish the studio.

The first "Nightmare" movie was made by Wes Craven and released in 1984. The runaway success of the film spawned a slew of sequels and created one of the most popular villains in screen history, Freddy Krueger, played by Robert Englund.

The film centered on Krueger, a serial child killer murdered by angry parents, who returns with a burned face and a razor glove to terrorize teens in their dreams.

A screenwriter will be hired once the Writers Guild of America strike ends. The producers -- Michael Bay, Brad Fuller and Andrew Form -- are hoping to focus part of the new movie on Krueger's backstory.

Platinum Dunes is prepping another re-launch, "Friday the 13th," which will be directed by Marcus Nispel for New Line, for whom it remade "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" and its sequel.

I like Freddy Krueger & his whole concept of being a nightmare slasher guy (as opposed to Jason, Michael, etc)

And I really didn't think Freddy VS Jason was that bad. But as long as they have a decent story & Robert Englund (who I'd thinnk wouldn't join a half-ass movie, I'd see it)

And since every and I mean EVERY possible horror movie is getting re-made anyway, I'd prefer to see one that has some resemblance of originality left do well...

My sister and I used to force my brother to watch nightmare on elm street when he was 6... he was petrified, would have nightmares... hilarious.

I will probably watch another freddy movie if one comes out.

I just remember the seriously hot guys in the Freddy movies. Although they were always the first to die-they often died in their underpants!

Well this kinda sucks....Nothing will ever compare to the original, its a classic...

I actually like the idea. Maybe it would actually be scary this time. Nightmare On Elm Street was one of the first horror movies I saw as a kid and I thought it was BORING. Dont believe me ask my step dad. I was laughing more then anything the entire movie. He kept asking me what I was laughing at and I said "this is stupid and not scary Ed". But to each his own. We all enjoy different movies. I am not trying to diss anyone that likes the series.

Now Friday the 13th series is a awesome series!!! The first one scared me lol.

I'd really like the next movie to show a backstory in which you find out the townspeople were wrong, and that Freddy was NOT the childkiller. It would make him kind of like the anti-hero who is seeking revenge for having been wronged.

Lol. They're waiting for the writer's strike to end so then can write something that's already been done to death.

<The biggest Freddy fan and this is news I have been WAITING for. They better use Robert Englund tho and I really do think this one should be more serious than funny... and have saw like deaths that are hard to watch.... take it in a new direction.

Oh wow how original. They're giving him a a big back-story. Just like Leatherface, Michael Myers and the new Friday the 13th.
When they remake The Birds do you think they'll spend more than half the movie explaining why the birds are what they are? Probably.

Fuck! The original came out in 1984. Whats next? The Fly? Candyman!?!? Scream!?!?!? seriously wtf?!

They've toyed with the Kreuger backstory too many times now. How many times have we seen it unfold? It happened in the tv series, several of the movies and it's been overplayed.

Freddy was scarier when he didn't talk and when people didn't know much about him.

I still love him and the entire series, but they should just leave it alone.

If they're going to do another film make a continuation of the Alice/Jacob saga. That needs to be closed before they open up a new can of worms.

Remakes are big because if you really look at it anything original that comes out now usually flops....The Messengers, P2, Pulse, Dead Silence, Awake, Stay Alive...etc. As the people we are tiring of the same recycled plots. So why not revamp something that at one time was original and good to get a new taste/feeling on the movie and to open it up to a new audience. Because if you show Nightmare On Elm Street now to a bunch of teens they most would probably be like this looks soo fake because of the technology. Its better now. That just my thoughts on the whole remake thing.

Absolutely. I guarantee within the next 8-12 years 90's horror remakes will be sprouting up just as often as late 70's & 80's horror movies are now.

Kinda scary when you think about..."From the mind of so&so, a terrifying new re-imagining of Scream"

Its been almost 12 years already for Scream...whats 8 more years to Hollywood to jump on the 20th anniversary train?
