Return of the Jedi missing lightsaber scene

I think the better reason to remove it was that it was totally unnecessary for the purposes of the story, since we can be reasonably expected to piece together the sequence of events that led to the lightsaber being inside R2 without being shown.

Indeed, it is more suspenseful to not know how Luke is going to arm himself, so that when his lightsaber appears from inside the droid, there is an "Aha!" moment, followed by a sense of relief--neither of which would have come if we knew beforehand the exact details of Luke's escape plan.
 
Wonder how much this trilogy will be on Blu-Ray 300 bucks.
 
They're touting the Blu-ray releases as the FINAL and most DEFINITIVE versions of the movies, so it'll be interesting to see what else Lucas decides to change. Some of the changes he made for the DVD release made sense, like adding Ian McDiarmid to Empire, but others were ridiculous, like adding Hayden Christensen to Jedi. Obi-Wan and Yoda didn't revert to their younger selves when they died and became ghosts, so why would Anakin?
 
I'm glad they removed this scene. Like Fire said, it adds a bit of mystery to how Luke escapes.

That's something I didn't understand, either. I believe Lucas was trying to tie the two trilogies together with it.

It might also have to do with him being good again. Because he switched to the dark side when he was young.
But then again he did become good again right before he died, so they should have left it as is, instead of putting Christensen in there.

Honestly, as much as I don't care for the constant tinkering that they've been doing to the original trilogy, this actually makes sense to me. Anakin DID look like Hayden Christensen at one time. He never looked like Sebastian Shaw.
 
one controversial change was the bar scene in the original when han solo shoots the bounty hunter. This was changed in a later release so that the bounty hunter shoots first and han solo fires back in self defence.

However I am interested to know when the final final final versions will come out because in this last film there was apparently 1 hour of original footage taken out from the opening battle scene where they rescue palpatine. Would be interesting to see some of that.

Then why not replace Sir Alec Guinness with Ewan McGregor?

No, you're not. So, Hayden looks like a legitimate Anakin but Ewan doesn't look like a legitimate Obi-Wan? That makes no sense whatsoever.

(For the record, I haven't seen any of the 'prequel' movies.)

This is probably the problem. I'll see what I can do to be clearer.

This is what Obi Wan and Anakin looked like in Episode One. You could come up with a valid reason using either of these actors at the end of Jedi.

This is what Anakin looked like in Episode 2 and 3. This is what they went with in the most recent fiddling with Jedi, and there is a certain logic to it, as it's the last time he was a jedi.

This is what they looked like in the original trilogy. They went with Sir Alec which made sense, but not ghost Vader, which is a valid choice as far as I understand the Jedi religion but would have been weird from a storyline point of view. The problem comes at the end of Jedi.

This is what Anakin looked like when he died. Having ghost Anakin look like this

makes no sense because although WE know that this is what Sebastian Shaw looks like out of makeup, as far as the Star Wars universe is concerned this is completely hypothetical. So as far as I'm concerned, the original Jedi ending had the most logical choices for how Yoda and Obi Wan should look, but the least likely choice for how Anakin should look.

post script - I'd like to thank everyone for their patience (especially gsdx) while I hijacked this thread to explain myself. I thought about just PMing this, but in my experience for everyone who asks me what I'm talking about, there are several others that don't understand and just don't say anything.

That reasoning I can understand, although I'm not certain that's what George had in mind when he made the switch.

And I suspect the 'ghost' of Sebastian Shaw was used for Anakin because, at that time, there were no plans for the prequels. When Star Wars was released, it wasn't even a 'given' that The Empire Strikes Back was going to be made.
