On-Topic Rhode Island Approves Marriage Equality: Tenth State

By a 56-15 vote the Rhode Island House approved a marriage equality bill and sent it to Governor Chafee, who will sign it at a 5:45 pm ceremony.

With the bills headed to the south steps of the State House for a public signing by Governor Chafee, Rhode Island joins its five New England neighbors in legalizing same-sex marriage and becomes the 10th state in the nation to do so.

The matching House and Senate bills allow same-sex weddings as of August 1 and also allow same-sex couples who joined in civil unions to change their status to married.

ANd with that,all of New England now has gay marriage. Next stops,New Jersey,Minnesota and Illinois!
 
Forgot about that...and hopefully if DOMA is struck down..that will get the ball rolling elsewhere.
 
40 more states to go for marriage equality, and once the Supreme Court strikes down section 3 of DOMA, I think there is going to be a snowball effect with the southern states lagging behind.
 
The Southern states will have to be dragged in kicking and screaming..most likely by another Supreme Court ruling 20-30 years down the road.

Not at all..there will be other lawsuits to follow but if the Supreme COurt rules it's a states right issue..that is going to be leading to a lot of ballots and a lot of lawsuits.
 
One more thing..this goes to show the power of pressure. The two Democrats mainly responsible for blocking gay marriage in the past,Paiva-weed and McCaffrey barely survived primary challanges last year.
They knew if they dragged their feet again,there would be hell to pay.
 
Yeah you know what I think of your doom and gloom scenarios ;) ten years. If that. Ten years ago thee were NO states with marriage equality and the attitude was dramatically different. And the last couple of years have been a landslide in our favor. It's getting faster and it will keep doing so.

it is great news - one in a list of many states that is getting it right (or left)

as for a member who it has been said left in a huff ..... (not po)

his style of disparaging those who don't agree with him and talking down to those who aren't experts in legal matters

is not missed here
 
Congratulations to the Residents of Rhode Island.

@ Rolyo85: I don't think it will be as easy as you seem to think. The civil rights movement started in 1868, with the end of the civil war. We finally got the fair housing act in 1968. We still have hate crimes against African Americans in our current society. I do not think that civil rights for Gays and Lesbians will be any different. The right to marry will see many more battles and court cases in the future. I would not be surprised if we are still fighting this battle in 20 years. These prejudices have been formed over many generations, they will not be eliminated in one or two generations. These so called family values are being taught to the youth of America to this day. We still have a long way to go n this battle.

Actually, considering how informed users with actual contributions are being chased out by redirected mods, it will soon be just you, Jack and Benvolio posting here. And you WILL miss us...

I refuse to accept the past as any measure in this case. We live in a different age, information is much more accessible, everything is connected AND we have the past to show us how not to go about things.
 
Granted, we have past experiences, but as we see in many threads here in CE&P, We have a faction who choose not to learn from the past.

I for one am happy that our friends in Rhode Island will no longer have to avail themselves of a twenty minute road trip to get married! (sorry, I just couldn't help myself)
