Rick Perry poaches yet another California company to move to Texas

Utterly sad. I guess this is another victory for California Democrats.

Another major company with California headquarters will be shutting down its operations in California & moving to the Lone Star State.

Toyota has had its North American headquarters in Southern California since 1957, when they opened their first US dealership in Hollywood, California. They've been based in Torrance, California (a suburb of L.A.), for the past 40 years.

Until now.

Lured by Texas governor Rick Perry & lower taxes, cheaper land, and less regulations - Toyota's headquarters (& all of their upper level personnel) will be moving to suburban Dallas, Texas (Plano). In one fell swoop, that's a loss of over 6,000 desirable jobs from California to Texas.

It's also particularly sad, as Californians probably are Toyota's most loyal customers. Driving around in California, you will seriously see more Toyotas on the road than Fords or Chevys.

This latest exodus continues the trend of businesses leaving California for red states. Nissan, used to have its North American headquarters in Southern California too, until it moved to Mississippi in 2006. Northrup Grumman (defense contractor) moved all of its operations from Southern California to Northern Virginia in 2010.

Even California's most famous industries - the film industry in Southern California & the technology industry in Silicon Valley/ Bay area are leaving the state. Companies like Apple are setting up shop in places like Austin, Texas. Film companies are leaving California to go to places like Atlanta, Georgia & Louisiana & North Carolina, where they are offered huge tax breaks.

Heck, even porn companies are leaving California, probably also because of the new "condoms mandatory in porn" laws in California.

The Sriracha hot sauce company recently opened a new factory near L.A. but they too want to leave California, for a more business-friendly locale. Apparently 4 people complained about the smell outside the Sriracha factory, so the local city is suing them for damages in court and declared the factory a "public nuisance."

You seriously can't make this sh*t up.

Can any of the liberals or Democrats here please explain to me why Democrats hate businesses so much that they impose so many regulations and high taxes on them? And then when those businesses leave (& take good paying jobs with them) to "red" states like Texas, Democrats act shocked & surprised??

But it's sad to see California fall apart. California is arguably the most beautiful state in America, but it has been ruined by Democrats & their anti-business, job killing policies.

The problem with the US in its zero sum game of driving the country into the ground through corporate welfare is that off-shore companies will look for the best deal to boost the bottom line. The reason that you have so many people on welfare is precisely because the corporations aren't paying a living wage. As far as the corporations go, many of them feel that they are getting the value out of any taxes they pay by forcing people to have to work two jobs for minimum wage and to use food stamps to fill the gap that a decent wage would provide.

If California got rid of all its taxes, there would still be a race for Toyota to find the State that would allow them to pay about 5 bucks an hour.

Welfare is one of those key words used to describe hate towards lower income and the poor. I doubt JQ could tell any facts or knows a thing about how much people get , how to qualify, time limits, & restrictions. To believe that welfare provides a livable wage if one can get it as cash payments from a state is just stupid. For instance in many states single people can't get it period.
HUD, Medicaid, utility payments & SNAP are other examples and they have vigorous requirements as well. For a healthy single person they are next to impossible to get in most states and all have qualifications that are closely monitored. For those elderly, disabled, or children the amounts are hardly good enough to have a modest~ meek living outside of poverty.
I have a close single friend in Florida who works low wage retail. His annual income is about 14 K he receives 15.00 a month in SNAP food assistance. He doesn't qualify for Medicaid because his income is to high. He uses public transport or friends and gets some assistance from HUD for a nice old efficiency flat in a very bad neighborhood.
The people who qualify for all benefits are children and a single Mother. That seems logical for the children. If people break the law or abuse it they still are not living half as well as the greed raining down with entitlements and welfare for the top. Nor are business that are successful and money making sharing those rewards as in decades past with their employees.
For some reason that's beyond me I cannot understand why right wing flunkies that are towards the bottom of the feeding trough inclined to side with those that don't give a fuck when they fall into the muck with the poor and lower income they could easily become.

I tried to read Gov. Perry's book, Fed Up. The book was geared to the average fifth grader. When the governor asserted that Social Security is a ponzi scheme, that was it for me. By the time I got to page 50, I decided to return the tome to the library, embarrassed. I realized that I took time off my precious life that could never be recovered.

Nope. The jobs lost from Toyota's exit from California are about 6,000 high-paying jobs. These are educated, highly skilled "white collar" jobs in engineering, marketing, product design, development, etc. These are jobs that pay from about $60,000 to $150,000 per year. Toyota said yesterday that they will pay the *same salary* plus a bonus & relocation costs to all employees who wish to move to Plano (suburban Dallas, Texas).

Toyota's leaving California has big effects for Southern CA and the local economy. Toyota's office space in CA is about 30 acres of buildings; now it will be vacant. All of the local companies that supported Toyota & their employees are nervous because they will have less customers.

The mayor of Torrance said that he considers himself "pro-business" but he simply couldn't compete with the incentives Texas was offering. He said that the state of California needed to offer something to California to encourage them to stay, but California didn't offer anything.

What did Texas offer??

Mike Rosa of the Dallas Regional Chamber said in a statement that business executives such as oilman Ray Hunt and Sean Donahue, chief executive of Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport, worked for months on the effort, even though they were unaware of the company’s identity.

The move will have a huge impact on area housing as well as retail, restaurants and service businesses.

But it will also pump up sales at Toyota dealerships throughout North Texas, said Pat Lobb, owner of Pat Lobb Toyota in McKinney and one of the area’s largest auto retailers.

“We’re doing the happy dance over here,” Lobb said. “You’ve got thousands of people and their families moving here, most of them presumably driving Toyotas. There will be a tremendous market-share gain with this.”

Toyota started its U.S. operations in California in 1957 and has long seemed an integral part of the state.

But while the automaker is still highly profitable, it needs to cut costs, analysts said, and California is a tough place to economize.

Toyota’s U.S. sales fell 1.6 percent in the first quarter. And while it sold almost 2.24 million vehicles last year, that was down more than 14 percent from the company’s U.S. peak in 2007.

Jack Nerad, a senior analyst at Kelley Blue Book in Irvine, Calif., said the move has to make great economic sense to Toyota, a “very conservative” company.

Toyota will offer full-time employees and their spouses an expense-paid visit to Plano as well as a lump-sum payment if they choose to relocate, according to Automotive News.

Texas’ attractions

Texas landed Toyota because it has no state income tax, lower housing costs, a strong pro-business stance and solid quality-of-life ratings, analysts said.
