The Grammys are basically a popularity contest. .
I agree that in some respects it is a popularity contest as it would explain why Alicia Keys won 5 Grammys in one night while India Irie went home empty handed after recieving 7 nominations.
Acoustic Soul ,unlike Songs in A minor, was nominated for Album of the year so how could it not have won its individual R&B album category? LOL
Regina Spektor snubbed. Fidelity.

Artists like Rihanna are able to win because Umbrella was an incredible song. From the production (stellar) to Rihanns delivery. It was just perfection. The song was tossed around but noone could have made Umbrella the massive worldwide success it was but Rihanna.
Also many music critics said Umbrella should have won Record of the year as well and Amy get Song of the year.
Unfaithful got snubbed because i dont feel she is respected enough as a vocalist but she has improved and Take A Bow could see her getting her first vocal nomination.
That's how artists like Rihanna are able to win awards over superbly talented artists like Estelle
Estelle just crossed over to America so if she is to get recognition it would be this year but she is no match for Leona Lewis and Duffy so everyone gets their fair shot at a Grammy.
You talk about its who you know and radio airplay but that is BS.
Nelly Furtado had a big year with her album and Promiscuous girl and only got one Grammy nomination that year.
Hips Dont Lie got largely snubbed as well.
So at the end of the day it comes down to quality music. Look how many times at the Grammys songs and albums win that the general public never heard of before so to say its 100% a popularity contest is false.
So what if an artist is popular. Just because an artist is popular doesnt mean they dont make good award worthy music.
They had the opportunity to nominate Rihanna for Unfaithful but they didnt.
They had a chance for S.O.S and they didnt.
Rihanna kept going and stuck to it and finally could not be ignored.
Rihanna deserved her Grammy. Infact many critics said she could have gotten more that night and even prior to this year.
she CAN sing and she has a very good voice.
Ofcourse she can sing. I always wonder what people mean when they say an artist cant sing lol. Just because a singer cant belt the highnotes like Celine and Whitney doesnt mean they cant sing.
There is place in the music industry for all types of voices.
Alicia Keys IMO lost it after Fallin and sounds way off today especially live.
Rih-Rih looked mighty stiff and awkward dancing at the VMAs last week.
Perhaps you should watch the video for Disturbia as Rihanna was simply reenacting the music video on the VMA stage.
And then watch the one for S.O.S
then she'll be a superstar
Rihanna already is a superstar in the worlds book and in just 3 short years at that.

Whether you like Rihanna or not the 5 Grammy nominations i mentioned in the OP are more than realistic and not because she is popular but because she would be deserving of the nomination and win.
The only win in question is R&B vocal performance but anythings possible.
For those who say Rihanna isnt deserving i would like for you to name 5 other dance songs released within the eligibility period that is better than Disturbia.
Name 5 others music videos that are better than Disturbia this year.
The song she has with T.I. go and listen to it and then name 5 other Rap/sung collaborations that are better.
Same for pop collaboration. Maroon 5 has won that Grammy 2 times in the last 3 years add Rihanna to this mix and the nomination/win is pretty much sealed up.
But if you disagree name 5 pop collaborations that are better than If I Never See Your Face again.
