Re: Rihanna and the 2009 Grammys

We don't need to hear her sing the word Umbrella 20 times to realise that this song is about an Umbrella!!! She was singing about an Umbrella! I'm surprised she didn't go into details on how you have to open the umbrella up and then hold it over your head to make sure it works -

Oh my gosh i am so embarassed for you right now.

Your English teacher must feel utter disappointment , i feel it for him or her. Hopefully you are not a reflection of thier teachings.

But seriously, even if you missed a class or two this is basic comprehension.

You are 18, so if you are in school it would be highschool senior year and this is coming out of your mouth / fingers?

Oh dear, on Monday ask your English teacher what a metaphor is ok, so you don't look stupid.

Umbrella as successful as it was got a lot of undeserved slack.

It is a beautiful song with a positive message (although the message is lost on simple minds) inarguably needed in this day and age with all the negativity surrounding us. And it would have been no shock had it won record of the year, because it was the record of the year.

Rehab rightly won Song of the year but Umbrella was the record of the year.

Its not just the lyrics, the production elevates Umbrella to another level as well. The heavy synths and pounding drums are symbolic for the hardships Rihanna and Jay-Z currently face. An electric guitar joins in at the choruses, giving the music a kick to get the point across.

Rihanna’s delivery completely contrasts the mood of the music. While the music is depressing and dark, her voice is confident, hopeful, and reassuring. In most songs, differing tones often lead to a train-wreck - here, it works. It’s easy to imagine Rihanna and Jay-Z calmly standing amidst a busy environment, which is exactly what the “It’s raining heavily, but you can stand under my umbrella” metaphor alludes to.

Noone else could have made Umbrella the worldwide smash it was. Umbrella was made for Rihannas vocals.
It was just pop/r&b perfection and even though i like the, "little miss sunshine Rihanna were you at" Jay Z's rap was unnecessary.

Re: Rihanna and the 2009 Grammys

I'm not really too bothered of what Rihanna's number 1 fan thinks of my English. A) I don't go to an American High school. B) I got a B for my Higher English

I know a what a metaphor is but how can I appreciate one, when all I can hear is "ella ella ella" because that surely deserves some credit doesn't it Rihanna learnt how to repeat herself. But she didn't just do it with one song, she did it with all the others. That's why I don't like her; she started to repeat her lyrics in every song till they became the same song. I liked Rihanna in her other album 'a girl like me' I even managed to ignore her nasal voice. But now, its just been so overplayed that her voice grates on me. Sorry I don't like her. I'm sorry we can't all have a different opinion on this woman.

Re: Rihanna and the 2009 Grammys

I probably shouldn't have come on this thread in the first place, I just don't get why so many people like her music...

Re: Rihanna and the 2009 Grammys

I will give Rihanna credit for Umbrella and PDS Music, but honestly i think it ends here for this album, I hope 4 minutes whens for collab.

Re: Rihanna and the 2009 Grammys

I LOVE RIHANNA, but I have one problem that she does, and it is her singing live.

She sounds great on CD, but when hearing a song live / Concert, she tends to sings the songs so weak.

I have been thinking about it maybe she is exhausted. idk I know she did a great live concert in Montreal.

When she sings (Umbrella, Take A Bow, and Disturbia) it sounds weak when singing live. Why is that??? All three of these songs have been Number one, but the songs have a stronger vocal level than she performs it live.

Re: Rihanna and the 2009 Grammys

^^^Well, it could be the micraphone that she is using at each live show, if you're talking about the actual strength or power behind her voice. If you are talking about her tone, it could be the fact that they digitally enhance her voice as well. Anyone can sound great on CD, thanks to technology.

Yeah that's true, but you can also sound great live as well. All I know lately especially when she sings Disturbia live, it's not so good. She sings the song quietly basically on live session, but on CD her tone & strength is great on the song.

She sound pretty good on this one

She sounds really good on this one as well

I think she is really just exhausted when performing sometimes.

BTW: I hope she grows her hair back, it looks so much better longer.

Re: Rihanna and the 2009 Grammys

Who's dick was I sucking when "pretty" and "talented" became synonyms?

Correction, her personal stylist, make-up artist, etc... take risks with her image.

:rotflmao:

Yup, thanks to a great team of producers, songwriters, DIGITAL ENHANCERS, and so on and so forth.

Jeez you guys really don't mind gettin' the short end of the stick, do ya? Rihanna? Punk/rock? I'm sure they'll add an electric guitar and I'm sure people will call it edgy rock and she'll probably get a Grammy or two. Meanwhile Ray Charles, James Brown, and Frank Sinatra roll over in their graves.

she does sing very good i think, its not a horrible voice, and yes, she does have very good control over it, so its not all over the place, and for the punk rock thing, she said herself a few songs would incorporate a more punk/rock/.techno feel to it, im thinking of the band orgy when she said that, just not as heavy, rihanna is just starting out, shes only been out for three years, she has time to grow into a better artist, just like madonna did, madonna started off as just another throaway pop singer, but she grew into an electrifying artist..that has a lot of respect now, just as much for her music, as the risks she took to get here..dont write rihanna off yet, she has time..her voice can only grow stronger..

Re: Rihanna and the 2009 Grammys

^But what is she going to do when her boobs start sagging and another Island beauty who's half her age comes out?

then i guess shes fucked...i mean, idk, if rihanna grows into a better artist, starts writing her own songs, gets some vocal training and changes her style up every album, and gains some more credibility with the music industry and the public i dont see anybody really "replacing her", but thats just my opinion...

i think she makes some great dance records, and she has such great style..

dont laugh, but i really do think she can become this generations "Madonna"

LMAO. Judging by your..."paragraph," your English teacher apparently never existed. Talk about countless errors. If you're gonna insult someone about their English, make sure yours isn't worse.

Re: Rihanna and the 2009 Grammys

I've seen Rihanna live. I must have missed the part where she was talented. She can't sing on pitch, ugh, don't get me started.

Re: Rihanna and the 2009 Grammys

Okay, I was going to stay out of this thread, but some of these ludicrous comments are killing me.

she does sing very good i think, its not a horrible voice, and yes, she does have very good control over it, so its not all over the place,

Her voice is as horrible as it gets in the world of singers, like so many of our current mainstream artists. Her range is extremely limited, her voice is weak, and it is anorexically thin.

rihanna is just starting out, shes only been out for three years, she has time to grow into a better artist, just like madonna did, madonna started off as just another throaway pop singer, but she grew into an electrifying artist..that has a lot of respect now, just as much for her music, as the risks she took to get here..dont write rihanna off yet, she has time..

That's horrible that you would even compare Madonna to Rihanna. One was an artist; the other is a product. One could at least dance; the other can barely move.

her voice can only grow stronger..

You don't know much about singing, do you? As far as her voice, I believe Porky Pig said it best "A Deb a-da, A Deb a-da, A Deb a-da, that's all folks."

then i guess shes fucked...i mean, idk, if rihanna grows into a better artist, starts writing her own songs, gets some vocal training and changes her style up every album, and gains some more credibility with the music industry and the public i dont see anybody really "replacing her", but thats just my opinion...

She has vocal training. She haaaaaaaaasssssssss vocal training.

i think she makes some great dance records, and she has such great style..

I think her producers and songwriting team make great records and her stylists give her great style.

dont laugh, but i really do think she can become this generations "Madonna"

No, it's just not going to happen.

At best, Rih-Rih can become the next generation's Britney Spears. They both have the same equal amount of talent between the two of them.

At least, Britney can dance her ass off. Rihanna is just there.

Re: Rihanna and the 2009 Grammys

People please calm down. Some of you are going a little to far. This is reminding me of the Ashanti deal, and how people always said She couldn't sing either. New singers always get better, and better every new album. They train their voices more, and more to improve every year. Rihanna is still a new artist, and she will become a better live singer over time. She is still not used to the live spot light, she get exhausted a lot, and that is what makes her voice seem weak, and tired when performing live.

Re: Rihanna and the 2009 Grammys

She's not used to it?!?! That's a terrible excuse. She's been out for a good few years now. That's not a valid arguement.

Her rise to the top is such a cinderella story. Rihanna brings so much joy to my life. To think she is only 20 and has evolved into such a bonified international, record breaking, Grammy award winning superstar. Incredible.

I believe she is used to the spotlight after 3 years, especially after GGGB. Rihanna is used to opening and closing big award shows; but i would agree she is exhausted as she is non stop all over the world. It as evident at the Disturbia performance at the VMA's.

Rihanna is only 20 so the best is yet to come. Her success is just so much so fast, and she is in such demand; but she def can sing live. Whereas i always liked her unique voice, Ri Ri can only get better as she continues to rise to iconic status.

Rihanna has 3 songs the top 50 right now (!),

Take A Bow

Disturbia

Live Your Life

All of which made it to number 1.

I love you Ri Ri ..|:D

OMG!!!! How is that not a good excuse, she is still new to the music industry. A lot of people didn't hear of Rihanna till Good Girl Gone Bad album came out, because of her hit "Umbrella". I know a lot of people don't like her much just like you, but see you can't do anything about it. She is here, and she is burning up the charts with songs, and nobody can stop that except the fans.

This also goes to the people who don't like Ashanti, and other artist that they claim can't sing, but they are still singing, and their fans love them.

Rihanna: "I'm not stopping" (Rihanna Verse in Live Your Life)

Rihanna: "Get dem haters out your circle" (Rihanna's Dem Haters)

Ashanti: "I'm still here" (Ashanti's The Declaration)

Ashanti: "I'm gonna live my life, despite what you think." "All this jealous and hate." (Ashanti's Freedom)

Ashanti: "It’s no wonder why we still here, And all this hatin’ and we still here, You didn’t think that we would be here (OH!), Ain’t (OH!) no mistakin’, this is (OH!) our year (OH!). (Ashanti Verse in Wonderful (Remix))

Artist know when people are talking about them.

Danugh, You know i'm on your side, I love Rihanna too! Yeah, Rihanna has accomplished a lot at only the age of twenty. She is amazing!

People always are going to hate because they do (Opinions).

Everyone is going to hate an artist(s).

People Hate Ashanti, Mariah Carey, Beyonce, Jessica Simpson, Britney Spears, Brandy, ETC.....

People even dislike the late Aaliyah, it sad but people will be people.
