Just below the head, there is space, and wrapping half around the shaft, what looks like a vein. The only pain is from sores between the vein, and the head. I've tried to keep them clean, and dry, and it's seems to help. What could be the problem?

It sounds like you're talking about the corona?

Two questions:
  1. Are you circumcised?
  2. How long have you had sores there?

Yes I am circumcised. I've had the sores for over a month. I thought maybe the sores were from the thick ring being so close to the corona. I've been trying to keep it clean dry, hoping that would help. Years ago I had a vein that ran the length of the penis. It took a while, but it eventually went back to normal.

The reason that I asked if you were circumcised is that extra moisture under the foreskin is more likely to create the conditions for fungal and bacterial infections. In circumcised men, the skin tends to be drier and more keratinized, so there is less opportunity for moisture buildup, and fungal/bacterial overgrowth, unless they live or work in hot and humid conditions.

You can try an over-the-counter anti-bacterial ointment (e.g. neosporin, polymixicin) or an anti-fungal cream (they're usually labeled as being for "jock itch"). Because you've had this for a month and you haven't been successful is getting it cleared up, it may not be something that you clear up with over-the-counter medication. You will probably need to have your primary care provider take a look at it.

The trouble is the vein is so close to the corona the fold gets moist. I've been trying to keep it dry. I'll try some of the creams you've recommended. Appreciate the advice.

The sores are what concern me. It could be something completely benign irritation from soap, laundry detergent/fabric softener, lotion, lube, masturbation or sex. It could be something more serious like Syphilis or another std. Out of curiosity look up Lymphangiosclerosis (It sounds scarier than it really is!) https://www.healthline.com/health/lymphangiosclerosis#diagnosis some of what you're describing sounds like this, either way start abstaining from all sexual (yes including solo activity) activity until you can go see your Dr!

Just a general comment about excessive moisture and skin infections. Moisture control is a good preventative, particularly for fungal infections that thrive on dead skin cells in warm, moist conditions. However, if you get an established fungal infection, it would take more than moisture control to eliminate the infection. You should try the antifungals creams and see if they help (which would be an indication that it is fungal which is uncertain based upon your description). If it doesn't help, then you do need to get a definitive diagnosis from your doctor.

I am going to try the anti fungal cream. I do have a doctors appointment at the end of the month, but I am making an appointment for an STD test.

Had STD tests. All came back negative. Dr. thinks it's a fungal infection.

It's not raw anymore, so that's a step in the right direction.

Hopefully your doctor ordered a prescription strength anti-fungal for you. The over-the-counter fungals can be too weak to cure an established fungal infection.
