Rise of Fascism in the United States [SPLIT]

And this from Bluesky. And it is very true. But it is how totalitarian fascist regimes also work. They know there is no case to be made, but they also know that
their 'justice' systems can drag out and delay release...

"The thing about the Khalil case is that it's very very good that he's free now but you can't have it take three months between "the government kidnaps you off the street for no basis reason whatsoever" and "a judge makes them let you go." You just can't."

This was disheartening.

This might also be the moment when the battle was truly lost unless the SC takes it up. But even then, we know the Roberts
Court is all in for an autocracy.

This is literally the moment when all the masked right wing militias and other assorted chin beards waving their AR-15s
around should be protesting against the Fed over-reach.

Although, Trump may have overstated his 'victory'

"Last week, a federal judge in San Francisco issued a temporary restraining order against President Donald Trump's unilateral deployment of the California National Guard, saying that decision was illegal and unconstitutional. That same day, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit imposed an administrative stay on U.S. District Judge Charles Breyer's order, and on Thursday the court decided the stay should continue while the case is pending.

That ruling represents both a victory and a defeat for the Trump administration. The three-judge panel unanimously concluded that the president probably complied with the statute he cited to justify the deployment. But it also unanimously rejected Trump's bold argument that it had no business addressing that issue because his decision was "unreviewable." "

One of the features of autocracies: an unholy alliance with religion.

MAGA's war on universities has exceptions for Christian universities.

President Donald Trump and Republicans in Congress are angling to use their megabill to turn the screws on elite liberal colleges that take millions in taxpayer funds while sitting on endowments worth tens of billions of dollars. But a single college that’s a paragon of conservative higher education has managed to secure a carveout after finding itself in the crossfire.

Hillsdale College, a Christian liberal arts school of fewer than 2,000 students located in southern Michigan, is one of a slew of smaller institutions that had been working to avoid being swept up in the GOP effort to raise taxes on the seemingly bottomless endowments of household names like Harvard, Princeton and Yale.

To be fair, it was the Capitol police who zip-tied people in wheelchairs.

So... when a bunch of guys in hunting outfits with red hats break windows and doors to enter the Capitol, they're allowed to wander around. One of them ends up being rewarded with a few million dollars from the government after she tried to break into the House chamber while lawmakers were present.

But a bunch of people in wheelchairs protesting during a Senate committee hearing? Zip ties.

These are the same disability advocates who showed up in 2017 and protested when the Republicans were trying to repeal the Affordable Care Act (the "skinny repeal"). The protests made little difference, since the Republicans came within one vote of repealing it. Only John McCain joining two other Republicans prevented the repeal from passing.

This time around, the activists have been showing up daily to protest, with many coming from hundreds of miles away to voice their opposition to Medicaid cuts. The activists shut down a committee meeting. The international media has all sorts of videos showing the protesters being carted off in wheelchairs but it hasn't been covered by US media to the extent it was in 2017. The clips are probably showing up in social media, though.

These are the 2017 protests. The Capitol Police weren't nearly as rough.

Today, the President of the University of Virginia resigned, at the request of the Board of Visitors.

James E. Ryan had been trying to address some historical inequities at UVA. UVA in Charlottesville, VA was founded by Thomas Jefferson. Between 1819 and 1865, much of the campus construction and maintenance was done with slave labor. The University routinely "rented" slaves from slaveowners in the area, paying the owners for the labor. The UVA campus was built and maintained by African-Americans for 150 years, however because UVA was segregated, Black students weren't allowed to attend UVA until the late 1950s.

Then in 2017, Charlottesville was the site of a White Supremacist Rally and a counter-protest, during which one of the White Supremacists drove a car into a crowd, killing a counter-protester and injuring several others.

President Ryan's efforts to increase diversity at UVA and reconcile some of the history and mistreatment of Black people at UVA pissed off several powerful UVA alumni. Some of those alumni got into positions of power in Pam Bondi's Department of Justice. Those DOJ employees started an investigation into "DEI practices" at UVA. DOJ made President Ryan's resignation a condition of dropping the investigation.

In other words, Trump's DOJ forced the University of Virginia to fire the President of the University because they didn't like his efforts to increase recruitment and retention of Black students and faculty.

If you don't think we're in the midst of an autocratic takeover, talk to someone from Iran, Turkey, Hungary, Philippines, El Salvador, et al. The autocrats always go after universities, students and university administrators. Florida has been doing this since DeSantis became governor. Wisconsin tried to do this during Scott Walker's time as governor. Texas has been trying to do this since Rick Perry was governor. Claims about "DEI" and "anti-Semistism" is just a cover up an agenda to purge ideas and movements that MAGA finds uncomfortable. It also makes examples of anyone who tries to stand up to the autocrat.

The president of the University of Virginia is resigning following pressure from the Trump administration to step aside amid a Justice Department investigation into the school’s diversity practices.

James E. Ryan convened a meeting with his senior leadership Friday and announced that he would be stepping down, according to a source who attended the UVA Board of Visitors meeting.

The Justice Department had demanded Ryan step down to resolve an investigation over the school’s diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives, according to The New York Times, which was first to report the news of his resignation.

And so the US regresses further.

I wonder how the three liberal justices regard their GOP colleagues now as they see the Roberts majority tear away at the fabric of the norms of US law?

Do they still have fun having lunch with one another?

Send Birthday cards?

Tell me what the difference is.

The #1 phone app in the iPhone app store today is ICEBlock. It's an app that allows citizens to report sightings of ICE agents. It's motto is "See something. Tap something."

Downloads of the app skyrocketed after KKKaroline Leavitt blamed it for assaults on ICE agents by the public.

A new platform that encourages users to share information about sightings of Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents nearby rose to the top of the Apple App Store this week, amid criticism from Trump administration officials who say the app could put agents at risk.

ICEBlock, which launched in April, made headlines after a CNN article about it was called out by White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt and ICE acting Director Todd M. Lyons on Monday. Both cited concerns over agent safety in their statements about the app, stating that “agents are facing a 500% increase in assaults.”

ICE Barbie really doesn't want you to download this app and report ICE agents. :D

ICEBlock, an app that lets users anonymously report sightings of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials, has soared up App Store charts after receiving criticism from Donald Trump’s administration. On Monday, US Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem responded to CNN’s coverage of ICEBlock in a post on X, calling it an “obstruction of justice.”

Following this comment, ICEBlock grew in popularity overnight, bringing it to the top of the App Store on Tuesday before dropping to the third spot at the time of writing. According to its website, ICEBlock lets users report sightings of ICE officials with “two taps” and view reports that others have made within a five-mile radius. It also says the app stores no personal data, “making it impossible to trace reports back to individual users.”

One of the larger crimes of dictatorial power is not Trump's "extension" of refusing to enforce the ban on TikTok, but the Attorney Generals letter to media corporations promising them exemption of liability for breaking the law.

Congress passed the law by large majorities in both houses. The Supreme Court upheld the legality of the law. The President and the Attorney General now refuse to enforce the new law, citing some bullshit national security lie akin to the antisemitism ruse used to beat universities into obsequiousness.

When your Attorney General conspires to create sham defenses of political acts, you're ready either for a complete restructuring of how department heads are chosen, or you're ready to burn it all down and lett new trees grow there.

What we have is not working. And it's systemic failure. We cannot keep a government that has no actual checks and balances. The honor system is worthless when the people have no honor.

The Supreme Court said this was perfectly legal.

In 2021, the Democrats in Congress tried to pass a bill to prevent majority parties in any State from using tactics like gerrymandering to reduce representation of the minority party. Thanks to Joe Manchin [D-WV], the bill was unable to get traction.

It's past time to just do away with congressional districts and elect Representatives statewide with ranked voting. That way 'third' party candidates could get elected, and the GOP would splinter.
