You've GOT to be kidding me if you think Gwen Stefani, Fergie, and Britney Spears are gay icons but Christina Aguilera ISN'T.

Someone who writes about being yourself, not to worry about being judged, and uplifting songs, featured gay people in her music video, and was honored for it by the gay organization GLAAD. Out of most of the people named here..Christina is one of the VERY FEW who's actually done SOMETHING to be called a gay icon other than just having a widespread gay fanbase.

nvzblmn just sent me another elementary private message.

"its called a private message for a reason! omfg wtfzorz???/

your face reminds me of santorum.

lololol gtfo!"

This is really starting to get pathetic.

Here is the thing..... Christina didnt write or have anything to do with "Beautiful", it was all Linda Perry. Plus the gay couple in the video was the Directors idea, do you really think little Christina came up with a video that deep. No. She is the most overrated singer in hollywood. Period.

Oh and Britney Spears has done numerous surprise performances at Gay Clubs and if you have seen her Onyx Hotel Tour, there were many "gay" oriented dances between the men. Gwen has pulicly stated her support for the gay culture and Fergie, well I just like her :D

You have absolutely no idea if it was Christina or the director that came up with the idea for the gay men in the video. And even if it WAS the director's idea, it's still HER name attached to it. She's using HER power as an artist and a celebrity to bring notariety to the gay community, and THAT is what is important about her work and is why GLAAD honored her.

Additionally--Christina has many OTHER songs that spread the same message that Beautiful does--and those she DID write. Soar, Keep On Singing My Song, Here To Stay, etc.

When's the last time Britney Spears talked to a gay publication? Spoke out about gay rights? Gay marriage?

Oh, that's right...she hasn't. In fact she supported George Bush, the man who wanted to write discrimination against us into the constitution.

I'm not saying Britney ISN'T a gay icon...but to say Christina ISN'T and then even dare throw in the likes of Britney is ridiculous.

Plus Christina has been a long time advocate for AIDS awareness and was even the spokesperson for Mac and their AIDS awareness campaign.

I can't believe nobody's mention Anne Hathaway. She has a gay brother that she supports tremendously. She's even told a story about how she can't support a religion(?) that says the way her brother lives his life is a sin. I'm paraphrasing obviously, since I forgot the exact quote and I'm too lazy to search.

;) I've got good ole Anne on the list.

Sometimes, this is exactly the reason I dare not to start a topic.

Just a simple question, and more thrashing than discussion. Too scary.

Anyway, Gale Harrod? How about Megan Mullally, Eric Mccormark, Debra Messing, Sean Hayes, all the 5 guys in QEFTSG etc.

Frankly, I prefer to stick to the established gay icons.

Why are MOST of these people being labeled "gay icons"? Simply because gay people like them?

I'm a homosexual man that adores the work and messages of Lauryn Hill and India.Arie... but does that make them GAY ICONS because I and some other gay people might like them?

When I think of icons, I think of people like Striesand or Madonna or Cher or Etheridge... People who embrace and support and acknowledge the fact that their careers are strongly powered by the engine of their gay fans.

An overwhelming majority of these people listed as ICONS are hardly iconic. They may be what's hot or what's "in" at the moment with the gay community, and while some of them may be Gay-Friendly, their work and contributions hardly resemble that of an icon, in my opinion.

Don't even pull that shit! She supported him back when EVERYONE was supporting him! Look what happened to the Dixie Chicks and Madonna when they spoke out against him. Don't even pull that shit.

Christina is a gay icon. Britney...she just has TONS of gay fans. There's a mild difference there.

Oh! You MUST put J.Lo on your list!! No matter what! She must be on your list! Nobody can dress that good and not be a gay icon!

Or she's just an idiot.

You know what ? I tyhink gay icons should actually be gay!
So I submit:
Sylvester ( not new, but definitely an icon)
Melissa Etheridge -- same
Nemesis
Portia di Rossi (hot!)
Lance Bass and Reichen
...and any number of porn stars!

ok... i think this one may be established but Margaret Cho stands out.....

also I think you should definitely add Marvel Comics.... considering that extremely popular titles such as the young avengers and the xmen have prominent gay characters....

just my humble 2 cents

As far as rising.... Kelly Clarkson. She gets played in all the gay clubs, it's weird too. 'Cause most gay icons are big bitch diva's.... but Kelly this down home small town girl who asks for nothing but bottled water and Penut Butter and Jelly sanwiches back stage, is somehow loved by a majority of the gay and lesbian communtity. WEIRD.

Although, she's not a rising Gay Icon, Margaret Cho obviously. She IS a gay icon, one of my heros and insperations. Loves by all hated by the rest. Gotta love her.

may I say if you're writing an article for this maybe try to get some diversity to it. There are fields other than pop music. Acting and dare I even suggest the litterary world. I'm not all that familiar with current poetry but I know there's always been a fairly large subset of the poetic society that is gay and I doubt today is any different. Take a look there perhaps scanning the crowds for some gay politicians and people who are all around not being forced into being one fo the queer eye guys just because they're gay. It's HIGHLY dangerous to make someone an icon because of their fans because then you're beginning to stereotype yourself and if you don't want other people to do it to you you shouldn't either. And I'd like to reiterate the suggestion of T.R. Knight because his is young on a hit TV show and gay.

Just FYI..I do have people on the list that have not been mentioned in this thread.

But as far as T.R....he's not really a gay icon. He is gay...but he does not have many gay fans. If anything Lance and/or Reichen would be a better choice than him, but even they are not really at icon status.

but that's what I'm saying whether you're an "icon" or not is not measured in your fanbase. I'd assume gay people hope to be sucessful in a broader scheme and be like by all people. Secondly I think it's stupid to say who has "gay fans" because although I'm not going to deny the fact demographics exist it's still mild stereotyping. You need to come up with real criteria or use a word other than "icon" because an icon is someone who one aspires to be like. I'd imagine gay people, like all people, aspire to be good people as well as sucessful people not just people who have large gay fan bases.

This thread is ridiculously old, and I'm sorry to bump it--but I was reading through my old threads and had to respond.

This sentence doesn't make sense. Who is to say that isn't the whole REASON they have a large gay fan base in the first place?

Secondly, an icon is not JUST defined as someone who people aspire to be like.

"One who is the object of great attention and devotion"

That's pulled from the webster dictionary.

I love J.Lo but I don't think she's a gay icon. She dresses well though.

Kathy Griffin
Jennifer Hudson
Christina Aguilera
