I am one of those who believe the U.S. presidential election of 2008 was a realigning one favoring the Democrats. One thing that happens to a party becoming the disadvantaged, for a new realigning period, is losing touch with the voting electorate; and that happens when a political party fails to stay on track with a nation that is changing. The issue of marriage equality is magnifying just how ominous it is with the Republicans, who are reliant on their religious-right coalition (brought into the party fold in the 1980s by Ronald Reagan), and they are on the losing side of history. That is a topic that covers more than the subject being posted here in this thread. But, in the meantime—given this topic—one may want to ask: What new American coalition is the Republican party winning over? —CoolBlue71

RNC Doubles Down On Gay Marriage Stance Amid Conservative Pressure

With support for gay marriage at a record high among Americans, Republican party leaders from around the country doubled down to oppose it at the Republican National Committee's spring meeting in Los Angeles Friday.

Members of the committee voted unanimously to reaffirm the language in the GOP platform defining marriage "as the union of one man and one woman." The resolution went further, asking the U.S. Supreme Court to "uphold the sanctity of marriage in its rulings on Proposition 8 and the Federal Defense of Marriage Act."

An ABC News-Washington Post poll conducted in March found that 58 percent of Americans said it should be legal for gay and lesbian couples to marry. And support for gay marriage has been increasing among Republicans: In the latest poll, 34 percent of them said they supported it -- an 18 point uptick from 2004.

Gee, Gov. Jindal, how's that "Republican Party shouldn't be the party of stupid," thing going lately?

The Repubs actually seem to be afraid of losing their hard core religious base to voter apathy or having them splinter and voting third party right wing. I have to think that there must be enough districts where pissing the talibangelicals off would mean the loss of a seat.

What are the republicans going to do? Since Reagan, they're courted the religious right for their votes. The repubs forgot their message of fiscal responsibility and slash taxes for those who don't need their taxes cut and put major projects on credit. Reagan and both Bushes forgot about the deficit. They welcomed the extremists like the tea party and now the extremists has taken over the party.

In the 1960's Barry Goldwater was thought to be far to the right but compared to the republicans of today he's not. The party of Eisenhower is unrecognizable.

If today's republicans ignore any pressure of the right wing they will lose that huge block of voters and become more of a regional / state party instead of a national party. They're doomed unless they can successfully gerrymander and enact voter suppression laws into winning future national campaigns.

I'm wondering why people are speaking like most of the GOP leadership isn't the Religious Right.

Do you actually think that it's pandering for a lot of them? Or do they just agree?

Some of them maybe - but not all of them. I think it's a mistake not to take them at their word.

You think so? Then how do you explain all the hate legislation, discrimination, the affairs, divorces and serial monogamists, the sexual perversion and corruption in the republican party? Religious people are not supposed to do any of that. ;)

My very Baptist Grand Pappy once snickered as he told me.

"...boy if you don't sin on Saturday, you c'aint repent on Sunday..."

(I'm sure you can imagine the accent)

I think the people at the top are cynical and utterly godless (I am saying it as a neutral thing, not a negative one). In EVERY party.

I dont know about that.

I don't think GWB was lying as he said he thought God guided his hand. I don't think Romney was wering his magical panties for props in his community. Others I can believe are in it just for the power, like Rove and Cheney.

I have to agree with Rolyo. The people at the very top of the RNC and the 'party' don't give a shit about anything but winning. Having said that... the party has attracted so many Jerry Falwell graduates over the last 25 years that there is no question that it is more like a religious revival of the Southern Baptist Convention prepping for the Rapture than a collection of politicians paying attention to the temporal affairs of the nation. So TxBeau is right as well. There are hundreds and hundreds of people shaping policy for the RNC that are the equivalent of the goat fucking Talibani and would like nothing more than to steer the nation toward a fundamentalist paradise with the 'Christian' old testament equivalent of Sharia Law.

Michael Steele did a much better job than Reince Priebus, but got rid of Steele. It's past due to take the trash out.

Up until 2008..older religious WASPS mad eup enough of the Republican voting block that they could run on the right wing talking points and win.
In tbe Bible Belt states you can still run on that and win.
Here's the thing for Republicans..those WASPS are starting to die out..and the more they do,the more and more that they become a regional party.
They will realize that but it will take another election loss for them to do so.

And with Reince Priebus at the helm there will be more election losses.

The Republican Party I knew back in 60's no longer exist today. I left the GOP Gods Only Party when Ronnie Reagan was elected in 1980 and the party became the party of Religious Right. Today its tea baggers, Fox News, Rush Limbaugh, NRA, Gover Norquist and host of others. The party will never change to lose is above base.

Sad to say but how long will it be before one of the Religious Reich blames the bombing on MAsschusetts allowing Gay Marriage?
