Except that you can not have one without the other. You can't have blacks dating whites without also having whites dating blacks. And to insist the only reason blacks are dating whites is to become important...... Then what fucking reason would whites have to "date down" to such an extent as to provide said benefit to their partner? If the only reason these couples exist is because the black individual gets to jump up in standing, what incentive does the white have in the equation? What could be so valuable that he/she would willingly take the social hit on behalf of this "undesirable".

To get me to even consider there is anything less than a mutual desire to be with each other that is the question that needs to be answered, otherwise the suggestion can't hold water.

I think it's entirely valid to question the cultural attitudes, programming, and messaging that creates this "hierarchy" of beauty or desirability. But I feel the entire presentation of this thread only indirectly sought to do that at all, in the form of attacking people like Michael Sam and simply presuming them all guilty of propagating these patterns on purpose in a harmful or sellout fashion because of who they are involved with romantically.

We should question racist underpinnings to the beauty standard and to the sense of social class as it pertains to race in the United States. What we should not do is seek out every minority with a white partner and attack them as some kind of race traitor, which is what I feel Morrissey basically did.

Of course if things were the other way around, that wouldn't get approval, either -- I can just hear "Those white guys all think they're too good for black guys! And the blacks all think they're inferior, not good enough for whites! Why are all the black guys just dating black guys?"

I don't worry about motives much. And I don't worry about other people's choices that don't harm me (much). I look at the effect, and the effect is that mixed-color relationships become more accepted the more there are. So, whatever any whiners want to complain about, they're doing a good thing in the long run.

If a black man is dating a white man, then by definition a white man is dating a black man.
If the black man is "dating up", then logically the white man is "dating down".
The claim is that black men dating whites are doing it for the "up" status.

Every time a black dates a white you are also going to have a white dating a black. That is simple fact: 1 + 1 = 2. If the black is dating in order to increase his station what is the white getting? Because he would be losing station in the process. For the white to agree to dating he/she would need to be getting something reasonable in return. Or is everyone assuming a white dating a black to be merely an altruistic gesture?

There are as many reasons as there are people, for that matter the social dynamics in black vs white culture are different. To some whites dating a black person is a step up in terms of exoticism and danger, they view their white peers as vanilla, hardly a conquest worth telling the girls about. Other reasons, they don't care or even believe that it's a step down, maybe they're doing it out of defiance against society or family, or maybe it's incidental they like a person who happens to be black.

You guys are trying to apply mathematical properties to social attitudes? Good luck with that, there are 18 kagillion bazillion x factors.

As my previous post implied, I already knew this.

My point about your suggestion was that the theory that there are some whites who may see it as a badge of non-racism (see I'm dating a black) is a reasonable theory. But I doubt such a relationship would last even a week as its foundation would be quite weak.
