Had not heard anything about this then ......

The idea of CIA director and retired general David Petraeus as Mitten's VP

First blush my take is WOW - a dynamic, different and wonderful choice

He'd have to resign as CIA Director - which is not a bad gig - to "run" with Mittens who right now is not in the lead and frankly has not shown to be a leader - why would Petraeus want to hitch a ride on that wagon (hehe)

Then there's the vetting problem - much about Petraeus is classified due to his background

Did you know that Bush 1 was CIA director? I had forgotten that - he ran with the greatest President since WWII Ronald Reagan (ode to GC)

Petraeus is well regarded (save for scuzzball Harry Reid who called him a liar in a precursor to his recent brain meltdown) by all
My take is this would not happen as DP would probably not want to be a political animal especially in a situation as toxic as this campaign with a good likelihood that it's a loser

But he's a great American and frankly Mittens needs some mojo

No legal obstacle to David Petraeus pick - POLITICO.com

It's an interesting idea to run a sitting CIA Director in the VP slot. I honestly wonder how that would play out. Bush was CIA director for less than a year and there was a three year gap before he attempted to run for president. Intriguing, though, I must admit. Only thing is (unless his goal is a run for the presidency in eight years) I don't see a real benefit to Patraeus, do you?

^ u mean benefit to him personally?

if he has aspirations (i don't know that to be the case) of a political career, he could get "exposure" on the campaign not only to support romney but his own "brand" - get public exposure in a somewhat organic way - show himself to be more than a general/intelligence guy

not sure

it would seem rushed to me

but the guy is extremely well regarded as a non partisan type as well - this might sully that

so seems like i'm sorta saying "don't do it DP" ;)

Yeah, I guess that IS what I mean. It seems like a risk that he doesn't have to take so soon.

Good points. As for being more than a general/intelligence guy though, I think it's in his best interest to let that marinate for awhile. What's John Huston's quote from CHINATOWN? Something like "The one thing politicians, ugly buildings, and whores have in common is that they all get respectable if they last long enough." I would want to settle in before doing something too fast.

it would seem rushed to me

I think that's the best word. Military leaders USUALLY have the advantage of being well thought of on both sides of the fence regardless of politics (Eisenhower, Powell, Schwarzkopf) but, if Petraeus does run in the VP slot, it will be his fourth job since 2010 and that seems schizophrenic and a little too prematurely ambitious.

Whoever is chosen will immediately be demonized by the Democrat media.

i actually think one of the benefits of DP is that it would be very difficult to demonize him - and those that did would be exposed quickly as hyper partisan and unworthy of a read/listen

I wish Romney would hurry up; I need someone new to demonize.

I hope he chooses someone fun like Palin in '08. McCain's process or lack of it was very entertaining...the whole, will he take Lieberman thing?...great popcorn amusement. Good times! Romney has been a snoozefest and I'm thinking his mate will be, too (hello Portman and Pawlenty). I don't think Romney is behind enough to make a dramatic reach like McCain.

Petrous...I doubt it. He could be risky in that he must talk about issues that he may not be very comfortable with. This is usually when candidates put their foot in their mouth. Romney plays it too close to the vest to roll the dice.

but i thought you were a log cabin-er ?? ;)

Palin was fun the way having an impacted wisdom tooth pulled w/o anesthetic is fun

what i love is that steve schmidt - an msnbc contributor now and seemingly a good egg - played by woody harrelson in the hbo "game change" - picked her - obviously with limited vetting - yet he doesn't get called on it when on TV - it's like the elephant in the room

Pawlenty was on Fox last night - his "excited" state is dull - dull face, dull voice, such a goober - if mitt picks him it's more proof of his disconnect

we should hang sometime and demonize together - might be fun - at a chick-fil-a or panera or log cabin rally maybe

hehe

Chance, I think that would be a bold move. I like Petraeus, I think he saved President Obama's bacon more than once. Even if Romney was that courageous (which I don't think he is) and pick Petraeus, my loyalty (and vote) would still be with President Obama but on the off chance that Romney was to get elected, I'd feel a whole lot better with Petraeus as his VP. Out of the 5 or 6 names floating around -- Petraeus easily rises to the top for me.

Why not?

He seems like a good guy. Not sure where his political leanings are since he was in the army.

A retired army officer friend tells me that anyone who rises to the rank of general has skeletons in their closets -- sometimes many.

I do know he was very well respected for his time at Ft. Leavenworth.

I'm hoping that Romney will make a bold choice instead of the obvious -- Pawlenty, Portman, etc.

Don't you remember Palin and her speech at the convention?

The dem's were going crazy that she was so good .... and then.

Yeah, I remember. I was one of the them....she gave a great speech...pig in lipstick...good one. And then Palin met Katie Couric and Charles Gibson and imploded in amazing fashion right before our eyes. The Palin experince, I would think, will make future pres nominees of both parties go a more conservative route and not reach on VP candidates who are obscure and/or inexperienced. But, Palin was fun. That whole election was fun...Obama/Hillary; McCain, Huckabee and Thompson tag-teaming vs Romney. The '08 election gets an A for entertainment value. This election thus far makes me want to stick needles in my eyes.

U know, Chancey, us Log Cabin-ers have alot of issues on our plate. Here's a typical snapshot of our day/agenda:

8am-- Breakfast at ChicFilA -- "Pssst....Romney Really is Pro-Gay"
Noon-- Lunch at Panerra -- "Selling California to the Japanese...Finding Electoral College Advantages"
7pm -- Dinner at Cracker Barrell -- "Matching Skinny Jeans & Speedos For the Convention...Hello, Tampa"

C'mon, Chancy, join us. The secret password to get in: "tax-relief"

Petraeus won't be VP no matter what the media says. He would make a good president that IMO both parties could rally around. I possibly would have given him my vote for President if I learned more about him.

Pawlenty's approval ratings in his own state is under 50%. He would be a weak candidate, a non-game changer. ZZZZZZZ.

Ur mention of Steve Schmidt made me think of another campaign manager who never gets called on the carpet for this 'fiascos". That would be Ed Rollins...I like him...but, he has had 2 candidates who just had psychiatric melt downs under his watch--Ross Perot and Michelle Bachman. He just just go ahead and sign his next candidate up for a reality show "The Real World -- GOP Style"

The good money is on someone who would not upstage Romney. Petraeus would do that if he only ever moved his pinky finger. I think not.

the good money? from who?

anyone with a pulse will upstage him

is he gonna pick one of The Dead? ;)

Nah Portman and Pawlenty are pretty mundane... I just don't see him picking DP. What's more I don't see DP taking it.

I have a great deal of respect for the General on many levels. However if you look at the history of very high military officials becoming bureaucrats the idea isn't promising.
