Roswell incident celebrates 63rd birthday

Thu Jul 8, 10:30 AM

by Brett Michael Dykes

Sixty-three years ago today, the Roswell Daily Record reported that a local couple spotted a foreign object darting through the sky over the New Mexico town. From there, the story only got stranger: Shortly thereafter, an intelligence officer from the Roswell Army Air Field confirmed that the facility had "come into possession of a flying saucer," via the sheriff's office, which had investigated a local rancher's report of a saucer crash on his property. But the following day, the Army narrative shifted dramatically, with officials at the Roswell base announcing that they'd just cleaned up after a crashed weather balloon.

And thus was born one of our age's most hotly debated conspiracy theories.

The Roswell Daily Record initially trumpeted the discovery in bold familiar to connoisseurs of Cold War-era sci-fi films: "RAAF Captures Flying Saucer on Ranch in Roswell Region" read the headline on July 8, 1947. The accompanying article featured the account of "Mr. and Mrs. Dan Wilmot" who were "apparently the only persons in Roswell who seen what they thought was a flying disk":

They were sitting on their porch at 105 South Penn. last Wednesday night at about ten o'clock when a large glowing object zoomed out of the sky from the southeast, going in a northwesterly direction at a high rate of speed. Wilmot called Mrs. Wilmot's attention to it and both ran down into the yard to watch. It was in sight less then a minute, perhaps 40 or 50 seconds, Wilmot estimated. Wilmot said that it appeared to him to be about 1,500 feet high and going fast. He estimated between 400 and 500 miles per hour. In appearance it looked oval in shape like two inverted saucers, faced mouth to mouth, or like two old type washbowls placed, together in the same fashion. The entire body glowed as though light were showing through from inside, though not like it would inside, though not like it would be if a light were merely underneath. From where he stood Wilmot said that the object looked to be about 5 feet in size, and making allowance for the distance it was from town he figured that it must have been 15 to 20 feet in diameter, though this was just a guess. Wilmot said that he heard no sound but that Mrs. Wilmot said she heard a swishing sound for a very short time. The object came into view from the southeast and disappeared over the treetops in the general vicinity of six mile hill.

...which then prompted the development of the Neuralizer...

Whatever it was, it was clearly not just the official explanation.

Not with how many people came forward to say that the gov threatened them with death if they talked.

What makes me continually wonder about the whole thing is how the technology curve jumped so far ahead just about the same time. The silicon Transistor? Feverishly developed in 1947 (the same year). Coincidence?

From Wikipedia: (emphasis is mine)

In 1947, John Bardeen and Walter Brattain at AT&T's Bell Labs in the United States observed that when electrical contacts were applied to a crystal of germanium, the output power was larger than the input. Solid State Physics Group leader William Shockley saw the potential in this, and over the next few months worked to greatly expand the knowledge of semiconductors, and thus could be described as the "father of the transistor". The term was coined by John R. Pierce.[3] According to physicist/historian Robert Arns, legal papers from the Bell Labs patent show that William Shockley and Gerald Pearson had built operational versions from Lilienfeld's patents, yet they never referenced this work in any of their later research papers or historical articles.[4]
The name 'transistor' is a portmanteau of the term 'transfer resistor'.[5]
The first silicon transistor was produced by Texas Instruments in 1954.[6] This was the work of Gordon Teal, an expert in growing crystals of high purity, who had previously worked at Bell Labs.[7] The first MOS transistor actually built was by Kahng and Atalla at Bell Labs in 1960.[8]

*sigh*

I guess I believe that there are "aliens" out there.

It's rather myopic to believe that we are the only ones in the universe.

The question remains, however, is why did our government decide to hide it from us....

Did they think people would freak out ? Did they think society would collapse ?

Of course not. Our government is a corporation, and like any corporation, they care about money more than anything else.

I'm sure there have been lots of studies about how we could profit from UFO's, and how they could help us with world dominance.

Once again, it's the rich, old Republicans that have screwed us...

It may not have been anything extra-terrestrial, it may have been an experiment or government project not ready for public release - who knows? The more they tried to cover it up, the more people became interested. It's just more fun to think it's extra-terrestrial.

Although I think there's some sort of alien life out there in the Galaxy somewhere, I DON'T believe in UFO's.

Why would aliens be content with doing nothing except flying around in our atmosphere for over 60 years?

The subject is related more to human psychology than anything else. We see what we want to see.

:alien:

Haha! I'm actually in New Mexico right now (Albuquerque). We went to Roswell just so we could say we saw it! lol!

Beam me up, PLEASE!

I believe. :) We visited Roswell a few years back and had a really fun day!

I believe in aliens. What are the other planets there for? Decoration?

It would cause a stir if aliens were comfirmed to exist but society would stay intact. Having them visit Earth and seeing them in person would cause chaos.

People wouldn't be able to handle other beings, beings who could possibly be superior to us, coming to our world.

I might believe the "flying saucer" part, but not the alien part. Probably just another "top secret" military flying machine that crashed. When the government fails, we all know they try their best to cover it up. They just didn't want the world to know what a piece a crap that they just blew million$ on.

I have no doubts that there is other life forms in the universe. It is a near statistical impossibility to say there is not. Are they more intelligent? No one knows. Less? Still, no one knows. The safest assumption is to assume we could very well be in the middle, with some more advanced, and some less advanced than earth.

Now, I do have SERIOUS doubts that they have managed to reach earth. Besides it being extremely difficult and improbable, why, after all the effort it undeniably would have cost, would they fly around stirring up commotion from spotty, questionable people for the past 6 or so decades, and done nothing to reveal themselves?is earth really so entertaining to fly around invisibly for over six decades? I highly doubt it...

If there is intelligent life out there, it certainly hasn't come to earth. But it does make for good (or bad) sci-fi.
