Netgear always Netgear for me

but chances are that your problem is not the router but interference from other devices and maybe really thick walls. I would suggest you try it on different channels and if you still have problems the netgear 802.11n routers have rangemax next would be my choice

but i have a g router and it works fine for me

My wireless access point is a Linksys, and it does fine.

One router brand typically isn't much better than another when it comes to range. As described above, I think your problem is more some type of interference, or something with your walls. If you have plaster on wire mesh walls, you've got no chance of anything with wireless--anything metal with holes that small acts as a complete barrier to RF signals.

I've never used anything but Linksys, i beleive it to be the best brand out there. But that technically shouldn't matter as far as your signal loss. What kind of router was your previous model? 802.11b? 802.11g? 802.11b/g? And what is the new one? 802.11b? 802.11g? 802.11b/g? 802.11n? If you've gone from a b to a g, then u'll get better range and data transfer, but only if you have a wireless-g card in your laptop or PC.

But i suspect the problem has more to do with interferance. If you have a lot of electrical equipment nearby, or other wireless devices, or concrete walls, these can all interfere with your signal. What you may need is a signal booster.

i have netgear also i have there router and there wireless adapter but i been having problems with the adapter it would get really hot and quit working it disconnects me from my dsl wireless modem i even went to the netgear site to get the patach i need for vista and it still will disconnect me from my dsl wireless modem which is in my room and my computer is in the kitchen

netgear wrt54g since you can upload your own firmware on that one, and so i have my router running linux :)

I always use Belkin networking stuff.

As long as you dont get there el-cheapo $19 routers your fine.

That's actually a linksys, and you can only load 3rd party firmware on the WRT54GL now. That's the router I use with DD-WRT on it. It works excellently.

The thing is, there isn't that much more interference at all. The walls are pretty thin and I have my note book as close to my room door and I get a bad connection. There is a small closet that would be in the 'way' since the last room, but like I said, the walls are not that thick at all.

I don't see how it would affect it as much as it seems to be doing. The guy at the store did say that Netgear tends to have a weaker signal.

And I don't know what my model type is. I never really bothered to check into that.

the guy at the store

What store?

the differance would be minimal to none in the real world and it would depend greatly on the model a netgear range max would do alot better than a standard model

i used to have my router downstairs at one end of the house and my pc upstairs in the other and used to get 70% signal

like i said try differant channels maybe something is using the exact same frequency it happened to me i had to change the channel because the wireless tv transmitter interfered with my connection changed it and it works flawlessly

omg .. yes you are quite right. idk what struck me to write netgear .. ouch.
you can load 3rd party on the wrt54g as well. it wasn't available at first, but the were forced to open it up since they used open source code in the firmware ;)
