OUR WEDDING

"How are you feeling?", my mom asked me as she finished rubbing out any creases on my tuxedo.

"Much more comfortable then I thought I would", I replied with a smile. The big day had finally arrived. I was going to marry Lars, the man of my dreams. It had truly been an amazing couple of years. I went from being in the closet to out and proud, from meeting and falling in love with Lars, to becoming a public role model for so many people. Now I was going to take an even bigger step, and go on a new adventure.

After returning to Europe, we planned to have a small ceremony with my teammates and Lars' family. We'd then go on a brief honeymoon vacation before the season began. Lars had taken a job in the city I lived in, so he'd be moving in with me. I planned to continue with my advocacy work, in hopes that it would lead into a fulltime job.

"Hon, do you mind if I have a few minutes with Steve alone?", my dad asked my mom.

"Of course. I'll see you outside honey", she said to me before giving me a hug and a kiss. My dad and I were alone in the room.

"Steve, over the last couples years I've seen you grow so much", he said as he put his hand on my shoulder, "You're a strong individual and the best son I could've asked for" he added.

"I'm so proud of what you've become, and who you're about to marry", he said as he began to cry, "You truly have become a man. I love you so much", he said as he hugged me. I began to cry.

"Thank you dad. You have no idea how happy it makes me to hear those words", I said through the tears. After a few more seconds my dad let go. We composed ourselves and headed out into the ceremony space.

-----------------

Everyone was sitting and waiting for the ceremony to start. It was a small crowd of about 50 people, but it was all those I was closest to. My sister, Erica, was my maid of honor, while Chris was my best man. Some of my teammates from high school and college were in attendance. It was amazing how everything had really come full circle for me.

I turned to Lars and smiled. He returned the smile I always loved, reassuring and comforting. I couldn't wait to spend the rest of my life with him. The judge signaled that the ceremony was about to being.

"Dearly beloved, we are gathered here today to celebrate the uniting of these two men, Steve and Lars, in marriage. The couples have written their own vows, which they will share with you now", he said.

I opened up my piece of paper, cleared my throat, and began to read.

Nice chapter screamforever, although for me its kind of a long wait for a too short one, but i suppose you do what u can lol

OUR WEDDING pt. 2

"Lars, you came into my life during a time of great change. I was adjusting to life in a new country, away from my family, friends, and home. I also was finally being open and honest about who I was as a human being. The moment I met you, I knew you were something special", I paused for a minute and looked up at him. He was holding back the tears. Staring into his eyes made me lose it.

"The night I almost died I thought of nothing but you, how I almost never got to tell you I loved you, and how I almost lost a potential life together with you. You helped me in every possible way after that, and have continued to stand by my side. I can't wait to see what the future holds for us, and I want you to be there by my side every step of the way", I said fighting back the tears.

Lars was crying at this point too. I glanced out into the audience. Most everyone was doing the same. After a few seconds we composed ourselves, and Lars opened up the paper with his written vows. He began to read.

"Steve, I never expected to meet someone like you at this point in my life. You've taught me what it means to live and love again. Not only that, you've inspired me to always work hard and do my best in all areas of my life. You always are kind and loving to me, and I can't wait to spend the rest of my life with you", Lars said as he began to cry again.

"The night you almost died, I never felt more helpless and scared in my entire life. I'm not sure I could've gone on after losing you. I can't wait to go on this great adventure with you, and see what awaits us both", Lars said in conclusion.

After a couple of seconds of sobbing, we composed ourselves and the ceremony continued. The judge had us place our vows inside a box with a bottle of champagne, which was to be opened on our 10th anniversary. After it was finished, we were ready to continue the ceremony.

"We will now have a reading by the Maid of Honor", the judge announced.

Erica walked up to the front, taking her place at the podium. She read a poem about being yourself, and finding love where you least expect it. After she finished it was time for the rings to be presented. Chris walked up. After a quick joke about not knowing where they were, he pulled them out of his pocket and handed them to the judge. We were ready to officially be married. The judge turned to me.

"Steve, do you take Lars to be your lawfully wedded husband, in sickness and in health, for as long as you both shall live, until death do you part?", he asked.

"I do", I said as I smiled at Lars.

"Lars, do you take Steve to be your lawfully wedded husband, in sickness and in health, for as long as you both shall live, until death do you part?", he asked.

"I do", he said as he smiled back at me. The judge nodded his head, and we placed the rings on each other's fingers.

"By the power invested in my by the state of Minnesota, I now pronounce you husband and husband. You may now kiss", he said. Without wasting anytime we did just that, to the applause of all those in attendance. We left the chapel to the sounds of Home by Edward Sharp and the Magnetic Zeros and headed to the reception hall for dinner.

--------------------

The reception was amazing. Everyone gave great speeches, we kissed many times, and danced our first dance as a married couple to When You Say Nothing At All.

It was everything I pictured my wedding being, which I never thought I could have with a man. Towards the end of the night I was talking to Chris.

"Man, did you honestly think any of this would be possible when we were in high school?", Chris asked.

"Not in a million years", I said.

"Yours will come soon I promise", I said as I gave him a hug.

We stayed and danced for about another hour before heading back to my parent's place.

------------------

"Well, one down!", I said to Lars with a laugh as we were cuddling in bed. We had just made love for the first time as a married couple. We didn't do anything different, but it felt so much more amazing!

"Tonight was amazing Steve, and it'll be even more amazing after the next ceremony when we're on our honeymoon", Lars said as he kissed me on the forehead.

After talking for a few more minutes we fell asleep in each others arms, the position I had grown so accustomed to.

Here it is, the FINAL chapter of my story!

OUR WEDDING pt. 3

I was about to marry Lars for the second time! In just one day we'd be heading off for a Mediterranean cruise for a week and returning home as husband and husband. It still didn't seem real at times.

We had a small, semi-casual ceremony set up at the restaurant/hall where we held our team events. Hanz would officiate the ceremony (he had become licensed in order to do so!). Dieter was our Best Man, while Stefan and Antonio were ushers (my Three Musketeers were by my side yet again). Lars' cousins were the bridesmaids. My entire team was there, and were Liam, Toby, Freidrik, and all our other friends as well. It felt truly amazing to be surrounded by all the special men in my life.

After everyone mingled for several minutes the ceremony was ready to begin. Hanz called everyone to their seats as Lars and myself too our places in front.

"We are gathered here among friends and family to witness the union of Lars and Steve in marriage. Over the past two years I have gotten to know them both extremely well, and I can tell you that I've never seen anyone more in love then I have these two. I know that they're truly destined to be together forever. Their love is something we should all aspire towards. Without further delay, Steve and Lars have prepared their own vows, which they will share with you all".

Lars and I read our same vows from the previous ceremony. Despite having read them before, we were unable to hold back the tears of joy. After we finished, Hanz raised his hands.

"By the power vested in my by our great nation, I now pronounce you husband and husband. You may now kiss", Hanz said in a boisterous yet comforting voice.

As Lars and I locked lips, I shut my eyes and had a mini-flashback of the past 2 years. Me arriving in Europe, coming out to my team, meeting Lars, almost dying, growing closer to Lars, spreading my story, and now getting married. The tears streamed down my face as I turned to the cheering crowd. Several of my teammates were crying too. I wrapped my arms around Lars as we made our way to the reception hall for dinner.

------------------

"Steve, I've considered you to be family ever since you joined our team. It's great that now I can finally call you that. Welcome to our family", Deiter said as he finished with his toast and the crowed cheered. I turned to my husband, grabbed his hand, and smiled.

"I love you so much Lars", I said as I leaned in and kissed him. As he leaned back he flashed me the smile I always loved.

"I can't wait to be on that ship with you. You know anything goes at sea right?", he said with a chuckle.

"Of course babe and I can't wait!", I said as I leaned in and kissed him again.

----------------

I was in the bathroom getting ready for bed. Lars was already under the covers. As I washed my face, I glanced into the mirror and saw a younger version of myself, high school-aged to be exact. That version of me looked sad and scared, how I often felt at that age.

I continued to stare into the eyes of my younger self for several seconds. Some of the painful memories came back. However, they were immediately overshadowed by everything that happened over the past two years. As tears began to well up in my eyes, I smiled at my former self.

"You're going to be just fine", I whispered. With that, my reflection turned back into the person I was right now.

"Honey, are you coming to bed?", Lars asked me from bed.

"Yah, right now babe", I said as I made my way to the arms of my husband, soul mate, and the love of my life.

------------------------------------

Well, that's it. After two and a half years of writing, I feel like I've reached a proper point to end this story. It's been an incredible period for me too. Since I've started writing, I've been a part of a campaign to win the freedom to marry for all Minnesotans, finished grad school, lost a client to suicide, had my heart broken multiple times, met some of the most amazing people of my life, and developed true professional goals and aspirations.

I also feel like this story has taken on a life of its own. College and professional athletes are now coming out in droves, and being openly embraced by their teams, fans, and society. I suppose sometimes life really can imitate art.

Finally, as I mentioned before, this will not be the end of Steve and Lars. I have begun writing a spinoff story focusing on Robbie and his experience with his football team at college. It will be his story, but Steve and Lars will have a recurring presence of sorts. I promise to post a link for it here after I post the first chapter.

Thank you to everyone who went on this incredible journey with me. It's been an amazing experience and I hope you'll join me for the next one!
