A while ago, in a different thread and time, the topic was Rush Limbaugh and his importance (or lack of importance) as a leader in the Republican Party. I was watching 'Morning Joe' earlier where the guest was Mary 'zipper lips' Matalin. A small portion of the youtube link below was shown. Not only did she cluelessly refer to the current economic mess as a mini-crisis, she called for Republicans to follow Rush Limbaugh.

Has it come down to this ..... the GOP is in such disarray they need a fat, loud-mouthed talkshow host to lead them back to the promised land? Unfuckingbelievable! :rolleyes:


 
Two posts in this thread and in both the criticism of Rush Limbaugh is that he's fat.

Personal ridicule, that's what Obama Democrats know and use.

Shallow style over substance.

That's been the case since early in the primaries and apparently will continue to be.

And it's pretty funny in this case because that's what Limbaugh is railing about in that clip.

What you saw in that video was pure bullshit. Limbaugh is trying to canonize Jindal before Jindal has even announced his run.

I do believe though that the Republican party has to stop being the party of "hicks" and the illiterate. Putting a brown genius as a face of the party, like Jindal (not Steele), is a move in the right direction.

Jindal can articulate the party's platform in ways that Bush (geesh) and Cheney never could.

Jindal is probably the only politician that I think can go toe to toe with Obama intellectually (Bill Clinton is no longer a politician).

Too bad he came off as a creepy car salesman Tuesday night. Too bad he doesn't know how to put emotions into his speech yet cause it sounded as insincere as Bush's claim to be a "compassionate conservative".
 
I've seen Jindal on Meet the Press and I saw his teleprompter speech the other night, and it's interesting to me that when he's speaking straight from his mind he's smart and well presented but reading a teleprompter he seems in over his head. Interesting because it's opposite of Obama.

He may be the only one you can think of but he's hardly the only one there is.

You're only showing how narrow your thinking is.
 
I have to agree with you, Nick. Obama's first televised address to the nation was a little awkward. He pauses way too much, most likely not to have a clear thought but because he's trying too hard to chose his words very carefully. In the process he comes off a bit hesitant, and dare I say, unprepared. His teleprompter speeches are just the opposite - he comes off intelligent, articulate, inspirational and commanding.
 
My purpose was not so much to dismiss Jindal as a potential candidate (which I'm not) but to point out how rudderless the Republicans seem to be. The country needs a strong opposition party but not one lead by the likes of a Rush Limbaugh or Sean Hannity. Mary Matalin is an acknowledged leader in the GOP. To have her call this a mini-crisis and compounding it by looking to Rush for direction is IMO pitiful!

Democrats make a big mistake if they think Limbaugh is "dead." He's a powerful voice that a lot of people listen to every day.

That's why I like him and my doctor!

They think first before they talk. They're not the most verbose guys.

I like to know that people think first before they say something.

They're also good listeners. I can spill the beans before he tells me what he thinks. It ain't all about the doc or Obama I would presume when you're speaking with them.

Here is the Washington Post. The sentiments are the same.

George Will, conservative, slammed Jindal after the speech. He was saying Obama was a juggernaut and you don't counter a force like Obama with a weak and uneventful speech. I'm trying to find something he's written about it, but he wasn't the only conservative to dismiss Jindal.

I agree they're rudderless but they won't remain so. That's the nature of the beast.

At this point looking to Limbaugh for direction is natural for them. When I picked up my car at the mechanic last week, they'd changed my radio from NPR to the local station carrying Limbaugh. They always do that, which I think is kind of charming (maybe I think it's charming because my mechanics are hot?), but this time I noted it because it told me Republicans haven't switched him off. It's easy to dismiss him as a nut but the truth is he's smart and a powerful presence on radio.

Meanwhile, people like Matalin will show up because they're articulate and a reliable opposition (makes for good TV) until the new stars emerge. The GOP will change with new people rising in it (as the Democratic Party is changing with Obama and his supporters in power) but the question is how. They're trying out new things like Palin, Steele and Jindal, and will continue to until someone(s) catch on. I'm hoping, for the sake of our nation, whomever comes into power and redirects the GOP is smart and honest-minded.

Well Limbaugh is an entertainer and he's over the top, but it's useful and helpful to have opposition voices. Bush & Co tried to silence it, and I've seen the same from Obama & Supporters all along. It's a bad sign when those in power try to stifle dissent, no matter how they do it.

A lot of them did.

I agree his performance was very weak.

But I'm not sure their railing means anything because I'm not sure the GOP response to Obama's speech would have meant anything even if it'd been delivered by the best speaker ever. Obama's at the top of his game, he's got the wind at his back, and all Republicans can do following his speeches is let it be. They cannot compete so there's no point in getting their panties all twisted wishing they could. They need to keep their fight on other battlefields.
