  • Hi Guest - Did you know?
Hot Topics is a Safe for Work (SFW) forum.

Ryan Russell Comes Out

The topic addressed was straight [pride] ceremonies. Nothing to do with levels of difficulty.

It appears that you'd rather be rude than think, today, so I'll leave you to it.

If my post came over as being rude I do apologise it wasn't meant to; it was just an opposite opinion to your's.

"As many straights have pointed out, straights don't have coming out ceremonies."

You do realise that straights don't have to come out; that is why they don't make videos. You do also realise that your happy little homo/hetero life style is thanks to all those who came before shouting from the roof that they were gay.

And we thank them for that. Just like how we thank our founding fathers for having picked up arms against the British. We also thank our brave soldiers during WW2 for making their way into Germany. Should we send the army into Germany right now at this moment?

The point is back then we needed the heros who stood at the roof top making all those noises that they were gay. We needed that at the time to further our rights. But just because such actions were needed at the time doesn't mean they are effective nowadays.

Society has grown to accept that we are not going anywhere. And again, thank you those who came before us banging and yelling they were gay. But we don't need that tactic anymore. What really helps nowadays is we normalize gay relationships. And we don't normalize it by banging and yelling we are gay. We normalize it by showing the world we go about our daily lives just the same as everyone else.

Note that I am not against coming out videos. There are plenty of that around. I'm just pointing out we are at a point where not making a scene and just live our normal daily lives as gay couples to show the world we are ready to fully integrate into the larger society is a lot more effective than yelling from the roof that we are gay.

Sorry but I think that you are over optimistic that the time for shouting on the rooftops is over. If we merge into the heterosexual world there is a strong chance that no more progress, even a possible regression, will occur.

Also whilst you live your comfortable life you are ignoring all those countries where equality has not yet been achieved and never will be if people don’t stand up and proclaim their rights.

I understand your opinion as it is how I have lived my life. The only coming out I ever did was to my father, we weren’t close and it had no importance to me. For the rest I lived open about my sexuality exactly as you suggest.

We need what's-his-face back here to complain that this guy isn't a good enough football player to come out.

God knows we've heard innumerable times in Hot Topics that we don't want this gay or that gay representing us. As if we're some kind of club.

Dan Savage, George Michael, and Liberace come to mind, but there have been many others.

We are an orientation, not a lifestyle choice. That means we have tax cheats, pedophiles, serial killers, actors, politicians, priests, polluters, prize fighters, billionaires, corn farmers, pimps, and the whole range of society in our ranks. There is no price of admission, not for the good, not for the closeted, and not for the vile.
