I have seen great strides forward in South Africa over the years. I can only hope that this is yet another stride which is successfully taken.

Last hurdle looms for same-sex marriages

Parliament is racing against time to ensure same-sex marriages will be legal in 15 days' time - amid outraged criticism from conservative groupings.

The hotly debated Civil Union Bill was approved by the National Assembly on Tuesday.

But parliament's second house - the National Council of Provinces - must now process the bill through its home affairs committee.

How embarrassed are you , America, that fucking SOUTH AFRICA is ahead of you in Human Rights?

I mean, this is humiliating.
Many of you aren't young enough to remember when the USA used to point accusing fingers at South Africa and call them one of the world's worst villains because of their apartheid policies.

Suddenly, I feel a need to start practicing my best Afrikaans accent.

Gay Polygamy

In some African countries a man can marry more than one woman. Its called polygamy, in America its called bigamy (illegal).

I was wondering if the new soon to be law in South Africa allows for a man to marry more than one man. If we talking about equal rights then...

I guess baby steps.

sort of makes you wonder how it is that a country that was so far behind in human rights to make such amazing progress so quickly and what the hell it is that's taking us so frakking long.

All democratic systems require debate on the wording of new laws. The court didn't write the new law for Parliament, they just demanded that the old (unconstitutional) laws be changed. The ball is now in Parliament's court. But if Parliament screws it up, presumably the court will have to get involved, once again.

Fair enough - that part makes sense.
