Nate Parker is handsome, intelligent, a good actor I was so excited about his film The Birth of a nation. Really thought it looked powerful, a good looking black man making an important film. Now I feel conflicted he raped a woman got off and the victim committed suicide. One of Nate Parker friends also involved in rape case got off as well I think on a technicality. Read Gabrielle Union Oped in the LA Times as well. This is so disappointing. I will not support Nate Parker or his film this guy is just a disgrace. The ironic thing is the original film The Birth of A Nation was about the white male fear of black males raping white women. Yet Hollywood decides to make this film picking Nate Parker a man who raped a woman in the late 1990s. I also feel sad the cast and crew of the film judging from the trailer it looks good but how can anyone support this movie? It just seems hypocritical to me, this guy makes a film about racial injustice yet he is a rapist.

The trailer doesn't appeal to me.

Looks like everyday Hollywood, but that may be to judge a book by its cover.

I don't know enough about the rape controversy to make a clear judgment. He was found not-guilty, but there seem to be lingering doubts. The co-writer of the film was convicted of the same rape, but then was later overturned on appeal.

Wikipedia mentions he may hold some unsavory attitudes about gay people, too.

Yes I read the comments so Nate Parker believes it is emasculating for a black man to take on a gay role? Yup definitely now not seeing this movie.

I typically try to keep the personal lives of artists separate from their work but sometimes that's hard. I mean, Roman Polanski is brilliant and has made some of my favorite films. Unfortunately he's also a child rapist who needed to be put in jail thirty years ago.

Nate Parker seems like a horrible person. I might watch this when it hits Netflix or something but I'm not going to be running to a theater to throw money at it. If it's good then nothing will change that for me but it will always be tainted by his past actions.

I don't see how anyone could be conflicted.

Honestly, I'm getting sick and tired of many gay guys in the community such as yourself. Basically being on some bullshit then acting super arrogant looking down on others when you dont have the right. I've read your past posts on here about the ones where women falsely accusing guys of rape and ruining lives. Now all of a sudden, you are singing a different tune. Get the f out of here with that.

You are entitled to your opinion even though to me, you are regurgitating someone elses shit to fit in with the masses.

First of all, he isn't a rapist as he wasnt convicted of it and hasnt admit it. He was accused, tried and found NOT GUILTY alost 20 years ago. Let me repeat in caps. HE WAS ACCUSED, TRIED AND FOUND NOT GUILTY ALMOST 20 YEARS AGO. So all this shit coming up has nothing to do with the movie. He's no Roman Polinski or woody Allen. It's just an attempt to discredit a movie that basically hollyweird and these sensitive racist fucks that can't handle some real shit such as nat turner and successful slave rebellions through something in the past.

There is this.

If he wasn't convicted, then he was found not guilty.

In which case, the accusations are even more resonant when you consider the movie.

If you can stomach it, you should watch the original...which can be described as the most racist movie that Hollywood ever made....and the terrible thing is that the film-making was just so brilliant for such an awful movie.

If you don't have the time...here it is in 8 minutes.

He admitted he does not know if he had the girl consent. And prominent black feminists such as Roxane Gay she wrote an oped in the NY TIMES saying she will not see the movie. Gabrielle union wrote an oped in the LA times criticizing Nate Parker also. Gabrielle Union is brave she is starring in the film yet even she is critical of Nate parker. Surprised you are supporting a man who looks DOWN on black gay men. Parker said he would never take a gay role because he wants to preserve the black man. Some gay black men like you make no sense. Why would you support someone who is against your existence?

^^ When I saw the title of the thread, that's the movie that came to mind. I've never watched all of it, I couldn't stomach it.

Just a point I'd like to make. 'Not guilty' does not - I repeat 'not' - mean 'innocent'. There's an enormous difference. He is not innocent. Remember, OJ was found not guilty by one jury and guilty by another.

I agree, and I would further say he might be either innocent or guilty, and it is very, very hard to know which.

If observers are certain of more than a looming question mark around the affair, I strongly suspect an agenda.

Did he rape the girl?

I saw "Birth of a Nation" many years ago. A historicaly important, extremely racist movie. I thought this new movie was going to be a remake, but I see it has nothing in common with the original. From what I hear about the movie, about Nate Parker, and what the movie is about, I do not care to see it. It's not the type of thing that would interest me.

It doesn't matter. Ya are ready to crucify a black man just for him being black. He can't do anything right unless a white person like you approve of it as if you are a slave master and he's your slave. Miss me with that bullshit. That movie is for people like you who constantly like to frown your nose on black people with your bigoted ass for whatever then fronting like you aren't prejudiced. If he were white, you and the OP wouldn't be saying shit. Out of all people, you had to chose OJ as if he isn't incarcerated already. That still isnt enough for you. You have nothing to say so stop talking.

I will watch this movie simply just to piss people like you off.

Won't be watching the film, can't be arsed with another angry black man with a chip on his shoulder.

Give me Big Mamma's House 15

Go watch the movie do it but the only FOOL here is you. Because Nate Parker HATES gay black men. And by the way, Nate Parker hates gay black men just thought you should know. Parker said he would never take a gay role because he seems it as emasculating a black man. He also said he wants to PRESERVE the black man. I do not know if you are queer, gay or bisexual. But if you are, you should be offended by Nate Parker comments. He is saying a gay black man is LESS than a man. How can you defend this guy who is a homophobe and a rapist?
See this the problem some black feminists have with black men. On the one hand black men want solidarity with black women against racial oppression. BUT as Roxane Gay and Gabrielle Union point out black women are also WOMEN. And of course as WOMEN they are offended that two men raped a woman and basically got away with it. The brother of the woman who was raped said in 2016 he firmly believes Nate Parker and Jean Celestin would of been convicted. There are black men WHO DO RAPE. So why must we make excuses for it? Nate Parker and Jean Celestin are scum bags! And I commend the black people male and female who CONDEMN these men and they should! I think people should boycott this movie.
I am so tired of black men like you. Look, it wasn't just Nate Parker the co writer another black guy Jean Celestin he was actually CONVICTED of rape but it was overturned. The woman by the way committed suicide years later in 2012.

Fuck these black feminists because they basically shit on black men in general kmowing that black men are vunerable as it is. It's an oxymoron. Feminism isn't for black women as its been used to continue to divide the black family structure and black women along with other nonwhite women were and are still being used to support the equal rights for white women only. These same white women aren't coming at white men like that either. Yet with black feminist, they are basically dissing black men and etc. It's not about equal rights. It's about excluding the man altogether to ensure the black family structure was disabled as if that shit isn't happening or wasnt happening already throughout American history.

I suggest you read up on history because you sound quite ignorant.

And you make no sense yourself. You look down on other gay black men yourself in particular the effeminate gay black men where you make it a point to disassociate with them period.

I really don't see what's the difference between supporting him and some of you other gay folks that are just as hateful as the people that you use to act so self righteous. Your sexual orientation is exclusive away from your personality, your mind and how you treat people. It's funny how folks are like support your fellow gay man even if they basically don't like you and are dissing you. Yall try to play that manipulation shit too where you try to excuse yourselves from the same rule book you throw at othersc in an attempt to make yourselves appear to be less full of shit. Yeah, I'll watch his movie.

I just watched the trailer, i guess it's a change from the Spike Lee nonsense of gangsta's in da hood, but the slave stuff has been done to death recently.

me neither...I'm pretty much into movies that are sci-fi, horror, or action adventure

big explosions are a must

I had to sit thru the first one in film class and have no interest in another attempt at this lol---but I'd be more into not seeing it if he is anti-gay or whatever rather than what he may or may not have done 20 years ago.
