saddest song you ever heard?

Strange Fruit by Billie Holiday

Seven trees
Bearin’ strange fruit
Blood on the leaves
And blood at the roots
Black bodies
Swinging in the southern breeze
Strange fruit hangin’
From the poplar trees
Pastoral scene
Of the gallant south
Them big bulging eyes
And the twisted mouth
Scent of magnolia
Clean and fresh
Then the sudden smell
Of burnin’ flesh
Here is a fruit
For the crows to pluck
For the rain to gather
For the wind to suck
For the sun to rot
For the leaves to drop
Here is
Strange and bitter crop

As singed by billie holiday

Southern trees bear strange fruit,
Blood on the leaves and blood at the root,
Black bodies swinging in the southern breeze,
Strange fruit hanging from the poplar trees.

Pastoral scene of the gallant south,
The bulging eyes and the twisted mouth,
Scent of magnolias, sweet and fresh,
Then the sudden smell of burning flesh.

Here is fruit for the crows to pluck,
For the rain to gather, for the wind to suck,
For the sun to rot, for the trees to drop,
Here is a strange and bitter cry.

I'm a bit older so I go with a song by Sade that I first heard in the movie Philadelphia:

Please Send Me Someone To Love

Fade to black by Metallica

Life it seems will fade away,
Drifting farther everyday.
Getting lost within myself,
nothing matter noone else.

I have lost the will to live.
Simply nothing more to give.
There is nothing more for me,
I need the end to set me free.

Things aren't what they used to be.
I'm missing one inside of me.
Deathly loss, this can't be real.
I cannot stand this hell I feel.

Emptiness is filling me,
to the point of agony.
Growing darkness taking dawn.
Yeah I was me but now he's gone.

No one but me can save myself,
but it's too late.
Now I can't think,
Think why I should even try, who knows?

Yesterday seems as though it never existed,
but death greets me warm.
Now I will just say goodbye...Goodbye. :(

This song drove multiple people through the world to suicide.

the intermezzo from Callaveria Rusticana, by Mascagni

"The Rose" by Bette Midler. It's a beautiful song, but when bartending I saw it really bring down the mood in the bar everytime it was played on the juke box.

Fast Car by Tracy Chapman

Not only are the words sad, but the melody is very haunting.
I second that. I love that song, but it's very depressing. It's so powerful, and the way she sings it, OMG. It's definetely a quality song.

"Picture" by Kid Rock and Sheryl Crow always makes me sad. :(

Blink 182-Adam's Song. For a while I used to listen to the song and never pay attention to the lyrics until one day I did and I realized what a sad song it was.

Wow

You know I have listened to that song hundreds of time and never notices it till I read your post. Then I read the lyrics, and you are right. It is sad.

I think one of the saddest I have ever heard was not really a song as such.
Its a work by Barber called Adaggio for Strings. Whenever I hear that it just makes me totally sad. Its a great piece tho, just very sad.

As a second, I would have to pick Go rest high on that mountain, by Vince Gill.
I heard that one night while I was talking to the bf of one of my friends. I had just been informed that he had been attacked and nearly killed, just for being gay. His bf was telling me about this, that song started to paly, and I was a bawling wreck.

Can't Cry Hard Enough by Williams Brothers (revived by Bellefire)

as well as Bridge Over Troubled Waters by Simon and Garfunkel

- they both remind me of my cousin who died of leukemia... her favorite songs

I have a whole folder of depressing MP3s on my computer for those moments when ya just feel like feeling sorry for yourself. Among the contents:

Tori Amos - 1000 Oceans
Tori Amos - Winter
Sarah McLaughlin - Angel
Dido - White Flag
Mariah Carey - My All

Also, for some reason, a lot of love songs depress me, such as Monica's "Angel of Mine" and things like that. I'm not sure why, really....

I have many... two I'll share right now are "Hey Jupiter" by Tori Amos & "Never thought I'd see the day" by Sade
