Safari security issue

yes it is real, and it's also really easy to exploit.

Safari is a particularly insecure browser. It is usually the first to fall at the annual pwn2own competition in Vancouver.

Mac users would be safer to use Firefox or (especially) Chrome.

^ In FF, if you click Tools>Clear Recent History it will clear the history and (I believe) the cache. It does not wipe out your cookies, but I'm not sure you would typically want to do that. Cookies would need to be removed individually.

Clearing the cookies, history, and cache does not protect you against malware and other exploits, of course. The concern with Safari is its relative lack of security, compared to its competitors.

Safari is the only major browser that lacks data execution prevention (to limit buffer overflow vulnerabilities) and it is the only one that does not support the advanced encryption standard.

It took Charlie Miller just 10 seconds to obtain complete remote control of a Mac at this year's Pwn2own by exploiting a vulnerability in Safari (running on OS X). Miller did exactly the same thing last year and the year before that.

No browser is perfect, of course. There is always a way around everything. But Apple does not have much of a security culture, because it has never had to.

no no .. you can CHOOSE what you want to wipe, including cookies. you can also choose if you want to wipe all of it, or just stuff from the last 1, 2 hours, days, weeks etc ..

This proof of concept has been addressed in Safari 5.0.1
