Who used to watch this show?

This, along with Dragon Ball Z, is argueably the most recognizable and popular anime cartoon of all time. Well maybe next to Pokemon.

I know there are a lot of changes from the North American dub compared to the original that people complained about (changing some homosexual male characters to females, removing sexually suggestive material, removing death scenes, etc) but the North American dub was marketed towards children.

I loved the art work and the artists creativity with the characters. It's a show marketed towards females but I think any fan of Anime can get into this show because it's simple, humorous and charming. It was also a treat to pre pubecent middle school boys I'm sure. :$


I liked all the youma, droids, cardians, etc.

My favorite was probably droid Hypnotica.

Infact, many of the monsters character designs were very creative and just down right awesome.

You can find every episode on youtube, english version or japanese version with english subtitles.

The english version after the second season (Prince Diamond and Rubius Saga) had new voice actors for a lot of characters and Sailor Moon's new voice was so horrible I lost interest in it.
 
Hahaha - I remember this show. Loved it. Brings back memories.

However, I would suggest that (sadly) Pokemon and Hello Kitty! may challenge Sailor Moon and Dragonball Z's status as the most recognisable anime of all time.
 
Hello Kitty is not anime though.
 
The Slayers definitely had better comedy and action I think, but Sailor Moon was a fun, LONG show. The end with Galaxia is kind of fucked up though.
 
I'm going to say Astro boy and Doraemon.
 
I loved this show! My favorite scout was Sailor Jupiter, this thread took me back!! My favorite villians were the Doom and Gloom Girls, basically anything from Queen Beryl was awesome. And its interesting to note that there were LGBT qualities in the anime, such as Sailor Urnas and Neptune, in the Japanese version I'm pretty sure theres a kiss between Tuxedo Mask and a villian (guy).Thank you! for creating the thread!! :)

Haha, I didn't think so either but a Hello Kitty! anime has been created to capitalise on the massive success and brand recognition of the character. I struggle to fathom the number of products to which Hello Kitty has been plastered!

The Doom and Gloom girls were pretty cool.

The episode where the DD girls fought the scouts was actually a 2-part show but the English dub had it merged into one episode. The DD girls actually kill all the scouts (except for Sailor Moon) but they also die in the process. The English dub had this changed to where the Scouts were "captured" rather than killed. My favorite was when Sailor Venus shot her beam point blank into one of the DD girls faces. I think it was the purple one.

As for gay/lesbian stuff, yes two of the Sailor Scouts were lesbian lovers but in the English dub this was editted out and they were known as cousins.

Zoycite and Malachite (Kunzite in the original), two of Beryl's generals, were actually a gay couple in the original version. Zoycite was a very effeminate male but in the English dub his character was changed to a female. This was obviously because the show was aimed at children so it would be way too controversial to have a gay couple on a kid's show. Zoycite's character was still very much the same even though the gender was changed. I actually preferred her as a female.

There were also a few youma, monstes, droids, etc. who had their genders changed for unknown reasons.
 
Sailor Moon is awesome. They should make a live action movie based on it! (Just not too Americanised). It's pretty cool.

I never saw the series when it progressed to include the other Sailors - Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto.

I have only seen bits and pieces with Pluto, but seems awesome.
 
I used to love watching this show as a kid. I know that the English-dubbed version changed/cut a great deal, but there are things that I simply like better.

The English dub was still very good even though a lot of stuff was changed. I did like Zoysite better as a female but once Sailor Saturn and the other new ones started appearing the license and dubbing was done by a different company called Cloverfield (I believe) and the new voices for some of the characters was really bad so I stopped watching.

There is actually an American version made by Saban called "Saban Moon" which featured a completely new artist and design and the show was half animation and half live action, trying to capitalize on the Power Rangers popularity but it never made it past a pilot episode and never aired on TV. You can find the trailer on youtube though it's god awful.
 
I liked Sailor mercury and Tuxedo mask. I never could understand how Tuxedo Mask and Sailor Moon never recognised each other, its the Clark Kent/Superman problem. I still liked it though.

I love Sailor Moon!!! The English Dub was Horrible. DIC changed things that did not need to be changed. When Cloverway did the dub it was far better, but still not great. The episodes I love the most were when they actually dealt with the story arc. The Filler episodes in either case are ok at best. Like the last part of the first Sailor Moon Series was awesome, same goes for S and Stars
 
Love Sailor Moon!! Just found out that this year is going to be the 20th Anniversary of the series!

If you hate (or love) the English dub, then you have to watch this webseries, Sailor Moon Abridged! It totally rips on it, and is suuuuuuuuuper funny if you are a fan!
