It seems the Mormons have taken the Catholic approach with "gays". For those that don't know the Catholic standpoint, read "Always our children" (http://www.usccb.org/laity/always.shtml).

The parts that stand out to me are...

"Church support for the ordinances is due in part to the way the legislation was drafted to protect those rights. Exceptions in the legislation allow churches to maintain, without penalty, religious principles and religion-based codes of conduct or rules."

"In August 2008 the church issued a statement saying it supports gay rights related to hospitalization, medical care, employment, housing or probate as long as they 'do not infringe on the integrity of the traditional family or the constitutional rights of churches.'"

So basically what I get out of this is that you can only discriminate homosexuals on church property now.

Well, a bit broader than that. Anything that has to do with the church is still run by them -- as it should be. And they're not budging on gays being able to adopt, either.

I have no issue with religious tenets about homosexuality. Religions should be free to hold to what they believe the scriptures mean and the Constitution should protect that right. But outside the church the government has to be for the people. There should be moral guidance in law but in regards to civil rights we're not talking about rights that impair others rights.

Just thought I'd trow this in here and it's NOT to stir up an ant den. I was talked into becoming a member of the LDS Church in March 23rd of this year by two amazingly good looking Missionaries... well let's just say I still feel weird being a member.

I'm not sure how to think of this. I don't attend church anymore but I still keep in contact with the current elders (Both of them are 20 years old).

I was in class with a mormon, and one thing that she made clear is that the mormons DO NOT all agree on this issue.

The Mormon church doesn't tolerate that sort of thing well.

You'd think not. But she lived in Salt Lake city for almost her entire life prior to marrying her husband and moving out here, and she said that Mormon views on this are actually quite diverse.

This is what we call Damage Control.

It seems the smear campaigns against Mormons in the after-math of Prop. 8 has worked to some extent.

So please, folks!

Keep throwing dog shit at their churches!

I wouldn't go that far. They're basically throwing their support behind a law that would grant partners legal rights for everything besides marriage. The stance is not surprising; anything else would actually go against their previously stated stance.

That is ridiculous on so many levels.
