Hi guys - wonder if anyone out there can give me some advice? I'm soon to visit the US for another holiday in New York. Previously I was travelling with my sister and grandmother, and at customs they instructed passengers to approach the customs desk in family groups, so we were fine.
Next time I visited with my partner, and we ended up going through separately. We approached the desk together and were asked if we were family, but we said technically no, so I was asked to step back.
Now my man and I are married, a civil partnership in the UK, but what I don't know is whether or not this will be recognised in the US. Or will I still be told to step back? Talk about your quickie divorce!

Tried looking online but while there's info about which visa to apply for, there aren't so many about customs etiquette. Plus I worry if I search online too much about how to enter the US, I'll end up on some list and get shot. ;)

Customs is run by the federal government, so I'm guessing that as long as DOMA is in place, foreign same-sex unions won't be recognized.

But this is just a guess; I don't know the actual policy.

I would take my certificate with me if I were you and insist that you be processed as a married couple.

But that's just me.

Yeah I would try that, but if it doesn't work out then accept that the U.S. is backwards when it comes to marriage.

No, the U.S. gov't won't recognize your civil partnership. The federal gov't won't even recognize same-sex marriages conducted here in the states that allow them.

We've always gone together and I never any issues. When completing the customs form if you both live in the same household it counts as a family.

I walked up with my partner, and was told to step back. It really didn't bother me. If you want to make an issue about it, feel free to. But if it's no big deal to you, go up separately.
