With Immigrants and Muslims being the new wedge issue, The repugnican'ts have realized that they have to gloss over their homophobic cant of the last decade in order to win over every vote they can this election.

Do you really think it is any accident that Liz Hasselback, Glen Beck and Mehleman have been making soothing and conciliatory noises?

This is all about the undecided moderates; the swing voters who will determine who makes up the house. And the repubs will do whatever it takes to convince these voters that they have a social sensitivity, even if they personally aren't entirely in favour.

I'd kill to have been in the GOP policy wonk meeting where the strategy was rolled out.

Their campaign slogan should actually be:

"We're Here, You're Queer, We need you for the next 90 days and then we'll throw you under the wheels of our campaign bus."
 
You know, years ago Coors went openly anti-gay and then realized there was gold in them thar hills. The result? It's pretty hard to find a gay-themed affair where there isn't Coors crap beer. This makes me wonder what these guys--and I emphasize that they are all, so far, guys--want ultimately from us. We are fond of saying in this country that Socialism doesn't work; I'm not so sure that capitalism works any better, except for a handful with all the bucks.
 
The OP is buffoonishly falling for the GOP strategy of using gays as a wedge issue. A few conservatives voice support for gay marriage whereas the party and its leaders continue to fight against gay rights. If they support gays why are they fighting against ending DADT? Why did they try to smear Kagan as a lesbian?

I never did give my opinion on this. The title is from the article.

I will say that I do hope for more support for marriage equality from Republicans. I think that they will eventually support it as a party...it just takes them longer. What we may be seeing are signs of the Republican block against marriage equality cracking a little. And that is a good thing. We don't need to wait for a majority of Republicans to support us. But if we could get 20% of the republican politicians to vote on our side I think that would be enough to push things through. I have no idea when that will happen but I do think it will eventually happen. The American public will hopefully demand it as more and more Americans support it.

As more and more Republicans speak up in support of marriage equality and other glbt rights, it will become more and more difficult for the Republicans to vocally be against it.

Why, none other than the most evil Republican of all Dick Cheney. His daughter, that fetching lesbian, Mary...

Before she became a public enigma, she used to earn a nice living as a corporate liaison for Coors Brewing Co., going into gay bars (sometimes with Mr. International Leather 1999, who would wear his chaps and straps, according to the Advocate) to convince everyone that Coors had changed. For a long time, gay people were implored by activists to boycott Coors, based on its funding of anti-gay causes. Mary got in there, talked about Coors's new domestic-partner benefits for employees. Mary said, here, try a Coors. She was good at that, and the boycott wafted away, and you didn't see as much Bud Light in gay bars.

It's a cocktail party featuring none other than Ted Olsen and David Bois, the lawyers who are arguing the overturning of Prop 8, and the feature of the get-together is a discussion of the landmark Prop 8 ruling!

This whole thing isn't about conservatives suddenly deciding the moral thing to do is support gay rights. No, it's all about saving face. These conservatives are just a little more astute about reading the writing on the wall than the others, that's all.

With Judge Walker's ruling, they've lost the battle over gay marriage, and now the Country Club Republicans are scrambling to get onto the right side of history, while they can, before it's too late and they're lumped in with all the troglodytes and brontosaurs that make up the rest of the Republican Party.

It just wouldn't do to be seen in the company of the likes of Strom Thurmond and George Wallace, you see. So tacky, so tacky, still supporting the KKK and segregation long after it fell out of fashion. Tsk, tsk, tsk. ;)

Besides, they need someone to redecorate the yacht, and they don't want to piss off Cousin Biff, the family interior designer who just came out and is heading off to Iowa to marry his high school sweetheart. :rolleyes:
