Same-sex marriage is about equality, not religion

Or if people would just recognize that THEIR religion is THEIR personal choice. Which amounts to much the same thing.

More often than not it is the personal choice of their parents.

Anyway if god exists, he is welcome to stand up during the part of the ceremony where they ask if anyone has any objections.

Well I agree with him, I'm on a gay porn board because I am gay and it's the biggest online community I've found. If there was a porn-less version of this message board I would probably stick to that one, as it is though I stick to the discussions.

All the sarcasm is really useful and fun, but you're not looking at it from their point of view...because you don't care. It's not about denying anyone rights, it's about keeping an institute sacred. Just because you don't have the same beliefs doesn't mean you should shit all over it.

A vast majority of the Christians that I've talked to about this have said that as long as it's not called marriage then they don't care. The problem that most gays I've talked to about it is, employment and child paternal rights not being recognized with the who civil union thing.

Why isn't anyone trying to change that up? Seems like it would be a lot simpler and cause a heck of a lot of strife. Make it mandatory for those companies that give spousal benifits give the same to civil unions and let's start changing the paternal rights.

It just seems (and this thread is just one of millions of examples) that this issue isn't only about equality...it's also about two groups of people fighting over an issues just because they want to beat each other.

Actually, same-sex partners being able to marry is about equity, not equality. IF we want legal changes, we should at least use the right words to make sure people care enough to listen to our demands, don't we think? I don't know - I'm tired, crabby and off to bed.

Because what you suggest is not equality. It's a second class status to appease bigots.

The law isn't there to keep people's religious biases sacred. Those who don't like equality are free to not like it - that's their business. I'm not concerned with their feelings one way or another.

Ah. Religion vs the government, an ongoing battle for centuries.

Well, I'm not Christian, but if gays can't marry then why is the act of divorcing legal? That's not very Christian like. How come wedlock is allowed? Should unmarried mothers be forced to give up their bastard children? Why can people who are not of any religion marry? These marriage rules should be more consistent.

Interesting how people pick and choose. I suppose it makes sense, with homosexuals being a minority vs a religion that has consumed many. I don't particarly care what God made concerning the politics of equality or civil rights.
 
Before you even begin debating marriage, you first must recognize the difference between the religious institution and the legal institution. Both are sexual and loving unions, except the legal institution is subject to constiutional law. By keeping a loving union - regardless of the name - between the opposite sexes the government is creating a pool of lovers we can pick from. I'll pick my lover, as long as they are over 18 and not related to me, I should be able to marry them.
