Im planning on going to San francisco with a friend so I was wandering if there are any people from there that can tell me what places should I visit. Not really looking for gay friendly places but just an overall of the city.

it would probably help if you described what time of year you're going and what type of "things" you like to do.

First advice, get yourself a Clipper card. You can get one at any Walgreens. This will make the MUNI public transit sooooo much easier for you.

I'ma split this up into the touristy stuff and the more local stuff depending on what you might like.

More Touristy:
Union street (shopping)
Ghirardelli square (get the ice cream at the chocolate factory!)
Walk the embarcadero from the Bay Bridge to Ghirardelli square
Legion of Honor
GG bridge
Exploritorium (Thursday for drinking)
Palace of fine arts
De young museum
Japanese tea gardens (Golden Gate park)
Conservatory of flowers (Golden Gate park)
Alkatraz
Japan town
China town
Union Square (Shopping and restaurants)

More Local:
Umami burger (this place is usually packed, go on like a Tuesday at like 3:30pm for a 15 minute wait instead of a 2 hour wait).
Barney’s gourmet hamburgers on lumbar and stiner
AT&T ballpark
If by the AT&T ball park hit up "The Highdive"
Upper haight (Shopping and restaurants)
Tropisueno (Mexican food by Metreon theater)
Pomodoro (awesome Italian restaurant)
I forget the name, but this little vietnamese place on 18th st next to Castro intersection. Its across from the bar "The Mix"
Tacolicious (Tequila bar / restaurant in the Mission. Kinda classy)
Do the Mission Bar Crawl
Lots of great restaurants and bars in North Beach
Blackbird (local mixed sexuality bar on market and church)
Dolores Park ("Gay beach" is where all the gay guys sit out in very little clothing to tan. South western corner of the park. "Hipster hill" is closer to the tennis courts)
If you go to Dolores park stop by and get ice cream at Bi-right!


Clubs/Bars:
Mondays: Q Bar for $2 well drinks or Trigger for $0.80 Cosmos. You'd think they'd skimp on the alcohol but they don't lol.
Tuesdays is les night
Wednesdays: Qbar for Booty Call
Cafe Thursdays for Latin night or Fridays for Boy Bar (castro. both gay nights)
Saturdays: Rebel for "Stallion" (gay) or "Bootie" at the DNA lounge (Mashup club, mixed sexuality)

Other great bars in the area: The Mix, Toad Hall, Badlands, etc.

Heads up, all the above is "Castro proper". You'll get locals but also a lot of people just visiting the city. Most of the local bars are along 18th or next to church for the gay crowd and it stretches on into the Mission.

The Exploratorium is rad. If you're into art, check out MOMA. The aquarium is fun, too. Also, http://www.mr-s-leather.com.

Make sure you get out on the Bay somehow. You can either take the Alcatraz tour, or take the ferry to Sausalito or Tiburon. Or Angel Island (state park) if you want to pack a picnic lunch.

Thanks everyone. Ill be going there hopefully this weekend. Its kinda funny cause i only live like an hour and a half or two away but never really dare to go there. I been to union square, the piers, and the design center there. just hope my cousin comes.

I lived there until I was 11, still love going back. We loved doing the "GoCar", a small gokart-y thing you can drive around the city as the radio gives you a semi-guided tour of the town.

After your upcoming trip, you will understand why.

But I hope you have a good time. The other parts of the Bay area are very nice. Wine tasting in Napa is very good.

If you have time, get out of the city and hike around Stinson Beach, Muir Woods, Mount Tamalpais, across the GG Bridge in Marin County. It's semi-wilderness, just a couple miles out of the city.

I definitely second the Steinhardt Aquarium (in Golden Gate Park, next to the Bandshell -- if you are lucky, there may be a free concert going on with some 60s' survivors).

Love the piranha tank! It's like a wall, and when you stand in front of it, the big group of piranhas stare at you, while facing you and clicking their jaws!

They also have a cool snake collection, where you are looking at a big tank at face level, then look down to see a tank of red cobras hooding at your feet 8').
