Scientists Discover Large Deposit of Rare Minerals Used in iPads

Joy.

Now they can stop raping the Chinese countryside, destroying indigenous land and poisoning its people to death.

At least, until the iPad 3 comes out.

Stop raping the earth!

You mean Apple isn't the only company that makes electronics?

One would think with the scarcity and the Chinese-monopoly, someone would be working to find an alternative to having the need for such elements.

I completely get the hate against Apple, but inform yourselves.

Speaking only for myself, I am well aware of the fact that the same minerals are used in a variety of electronic devices.

However, my earlier point was meant to highlight the fact that no other rare-earth utilizing electronic brand is so completely and totally based on rapid disposable upgrades as Apple.

So, in my book, they deserve a special 'zing.' ;)

It is used in a billion other things other than just Ipads. And most of them are more important and useful as well.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-pacific-14009910 <--- the animation in this website shall enlighten all. scroll down.

I am glad they found new reserves. Frankly I am not comfortable with any important reserves being monopolized by any other country.

Ugh.

These douchebags just gave Steve Jobs another reason to charge his zombie followers out the ass.

Huh?

A new supply means prices will drop. The reason to charge more was already in existence; this puts a dent in it.

What was the reason? The Chinese were planning to drastically reduce exports, not out of meanness, but because their own domestic market for such things (smart phones, for one), is exploding.

Thought: if the sea floor around Hawaii is rich in the stuff, they should check other seamounts.

I wonder if this will bring plans for underwater cities back out onto the list of possibilities?

Stop raping the earth? Consumer demand is fucking it up, not one country or one company...

Now you've found the seabed has plenty in the mud, are we gonna see the seabed being hauled over for minerals? I think it will be, and marine life in those areas will be affected for consumer demand is king, that's the bottom line. But, it's always handy to have a boogeyman isn't it?

Well what headline do you believe will generate more interest?

Large Deposit of rare earth minerals found.
Large Deposit of minerals used in modern electronics found.

Or the apple headline? The other two are only something for people who at least know a bit what this is about before reading the article.

Straight male scientists discover large Dildo-shaped rare minerals; mass orgy ensues. Sorry my headline is better.

I don't think it's about interest. I think it's about dumb-ing the whole thing down for readers. You see this thingy here yeah this thingy goes in your special machine. Yeah special machine you like right? Yeah special machine, bigger shitty version of smaller special machine called Iphone.

It's like saying: Scientists discover oxygen used by Lady Gaga for breathing. I have a sudden interest in oxygen now. Where can I buy one?

Just because they discover new minerals or energy sources it doesn't mean there is a guaranteed cost-effective solution to retrieve and process those minerals. They found large reserves of lithium in Afghanistan, but no company is interested to risk billions of dollars into that cesspool to possibly be able to extract and process that lithium.

This should be "good" news for China since she has decreased her rare minerals output for "environmental reasons". But it is certainly good news for the rest of the world as they are politically liberated by not having to rely on one country to support their rare minerals import.

Countries have stop mining for rare minerals because it involves massive excavation of lands, and the minerals itself are toxic to the miners and radioactive in nature. Just because consumer demands are up that doesn't mean the Chinese people and their land should suffer. China currently monopolize the market with their cheap labor, lack of environmental protection laws and the fact that 97 percent of the rare minerals (not anymore now that we have the seabed) is situated in the country itself.

I guess the Chinese government cares more about consumer demand than its own citizens and their land.

Actually China is very interested and they are very well on their way of extracting and processing minerals there.

Which should give the Taliban pause: if China decides the Taliban are a problem, they can send not tens of thousands of soldiers, but enough to outnumber the country's population.
Then they build bases for the troops, towns for the troops' families, and pretty soon the Afghans are outnumbered in their own country, at which point there's a referendum and Afghanistan becomes a Chinese protectorate.

Is there really much of a difference? dumbing down = wider audience, more interest.

I think people need to understand they are being enslaved by capitalism and dirty corporations. And also to stop grabbing onto every new device. Learn to love life and the simple things a bit more.

The article I read said all that needed to be done with this new deposit was to suck the mud off the sea floor, and then process it using a simple acid solution. It said the whole process can be completed in a few hours.

AAAAnd the deposits are in international waters, so claiming it seems to be as simple as sailing your boat out there and loading up. No armies to fight, no government interference.

:rotflmao:

You sure about that?

If only world of business ventures were easy as sticking a hose into the ocean and pumping out billions worth of minerals, more people would be jumping on the opportunity.

I believe as of today, there is not a single American company that is operating at any of Afghan mines let alone have interest in lithium extraction there. The decent of American contracting firms that mainly operate under the security blanket of NATO forces will flee the country once U.S. draws down its troops and ISAF forces leave. Again, no investor is dumb enough to risk so much in a volatile 4th world country that has little to no developed infrastructure, weak political system/governance, corruption and is at constant inter-tribal warfare that has been ongoing for many decades.
