Ano Nuevo....such an amazing place to go see them
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Año_Nuevo_State_Reserve

Well, when they find them washed up on shore, they are trying to feed them liquid. But I think that we should look into leaving food at Ano Nuevo, which is a major breeding ground for them. They are wild, so I don't know that it is a good idea to feed them like that....and there are a lot of them.

You should tie some cheese to the back of your boat then go near the sea lions and drive to their food so they can find it and stay there. Why didn't they just follow the food in the first place?

This is the same thing that happens in Newfoundland with Harp Seals, only the reason for the natural food source shortage is man-made via the fishing industry and illegal international poaching which totally fucks up quotas.

In the Galapagos, seals also starve to death by the tens of thousands every few years when the Red Tide kills off natural food supplies, in combination with ramped overpopulation.

At least in Newfoundland they’ve turned the problem into a cottage industry by culling the rapidly overpopulated heard back to manageable size, so they won’t all starve to death and destroy the natural food stocks (which seals and humans depend on) in the process.

But tell that to an animal-rights activist high on self-righteousness and unable to think straight due to lack of protein. ;P

Even Jacques Cousteau criticized the focus on the seal hunt, arguing that it is entirely emotional. "We have to be logical. We have to aim our activity first to the endangered species. Those who are moved by the plight of the harp seal could also be moved by the plight of the pig - the way they are slaughtered is horrible."

But I digress…

It is sad what is happening to the sea lions, but it has been played out for thousands of years. When humans try to ‘help’ they usually just fuck things up. Who is to say what would happen if all the sea lions lived? Overpopulation would mean quicker depletion of food supplies in the future, which could threaten the entire population in that area.

Nature knows what it is doing. People should, for the most part, just back the fuck off.

Tell Congress. They like to spend money. They will take care of them....from the cradle to the grave.

^Oh, don't be an asshole...

It breaks my heart to hear about things like this. I've sat for hours in San Fransisco and watched them playing and swimming and making that barking sound....

But, sadly it's a "circle of life" kind of thing. I think it's best that man stays out of this one. They need to survive in the wild and not get used to being feed artificially.

It's an awful thing, though... :(
