The power has just been restored to my neighborhood in North Seattle after an 18 hour power failure caused by a cyclone off the Washington coast.

For anyone who has never heard this, the trees of the Pacific Northwest are like bowling pins ready to be knocked over due to their shallow roots. The combination of high winds and heavy rainfall makes every standing tree prone to falling over. And keep in mind that toppling trees are a threat sometime days after a storm passes!

I'm going to call around and check on friends while hoping the power doesn't go out again.

Stay safe Edd.

I don't think I remember hearing that terminology. "Bomb Cyclone"

It's news to me, too!

Soooo, Seattle gets a taste of hurricane force winds because a cyclone moves-in from the Pacific ocean - and then the storm parks itself near Washington for two days!
Sometimes these storms act like they're under remote control, heading for one city then changing course to strike a different city.

I'll stay off the streets for a while - the city is exploding with emergency vehicles and aid staff. The sound of sirens haven't stopped all day. So far electrical power holding steady. 👍

I am very fortunate, Western Washington is still struggling with recovering after the storm.

Just last week I was bragging about Seattle's beautiful weather. Then, here's a windstorm followed by real wintertime temperatures - it's COLD outside!

That's because it's not a valid meteorological term. It's a scare tactic to keep you frightened and engaged and hopefully a few dollars lighter after you stock up on food you don't need. Technically, a bomb cyclone is slightly more dangerous than a sharknado.

I seen the headline and thought it was an attack on our power grid or something.

Definition from the NWS:

Cyclone
A large-scale circulation of winds around a central region of low atmospheric pressure, counterclockwise in the Northern Hemisphere, clockwise in the Southern Hemisphere.

Bomb
Popular expression of a rapid intensification of a cyclone (low pressure) with surface pressure expected to fall by at least 24 millibars in 24 hour.

Pretty rare where I am, but we have had them here. The last one was more about snow than wind.

When it comes to strong windstorms, we're much more likely to get them from whats called a 'mountain-wave' setup than anything else.
