Couldn't have said it better than Alfie. Unions in NYC have built numerous housing complexes, adding literally tens of thousands of affordable housing units. They run cultural, educational and social programs. One union started a bank. They run summer camps for members' children. Unions here do a lot more than negotiate contracts for their members.

On Sept 11, Unions were some of the first organizations to provide help. The construction unions and transit workers union, and others, in NY and NJ organized their members to go immediately to the World Trade Center to work on the pile. The entertainment unions arranged for klieg lights to illuminate the site. The bakery workers delivered thousands of masks for relief workers. I'm going by memory, but there was an article in the NY Times then about the response of the unions to the disaster. The unions were able to mobilize thousands of people to volunteer immediately. No other private organizations had the capacity to do that.

Unions routinely give money and aid where there are natural disasters, like Hurricane Katrina. During the holidays, I have seen many unions collect gifts for Toys for Tots, which I think is a program that the U.S. Marines run.

But why let facts stand in the way of mindless propaganda?

To create world peace of course. Not really into butt sex, if it floats your boat though knock yourself out. Actually I have read this forum for several years and I have been keenly interested in politics since I was around ten years old. This is a great place to debate people who think I am lower than dirt because I don't see things their way. A certain admiral comes to mind that recently called me an asshole and his ghost friend was there to egg it on. If it weren't so funny it would be pathetic.
