Second Presidential Debate - Discussion

Is there ANY redeeming characteristic associated with earmarks? Should they be eliminated entirely, or has their proper function been distorted from an otherwise reasonable “original intent?”

The thing is, a serious discussion about earmarks is complicated because there are different definitions of earmarks.

I think as anonymously authored spending of federal funds to specific recepients it should be eliminated.

(But McCain's point in raising earmarks during the debate was about creating transparency, and also to point out Obama's untrustworthiness -- Obama's whole campaign is about changing the way Washington does business and since deciding to run for President he's got on board in calling for a moratorium on earmark spending, but before that he indulged in requesting plenty of earmark spending.)

Huh?

McCain said "a $3 million overhead projector".
That's a lie, because "overhead projector" is not the correct term for what's used in a planetarium. He was deliberately making people believe something false about Obama.

Oh please.

It's "not the correct term"?

So what.

McCain told the truth, the $3 million Obama tried to get --twice, by the way-- was for a very fancy overhead projector.

Not all earmarks are bad. All of Obama's recent earmarks are fully disclosed.

Both Obama and McCain support transparency and accountability with respect to earmarks. Transparency and accountability are the real issue and both Obama and McCain supported the implementation of an earmarks registry to achieve that.

Both voted for the recent rescue bill, which contained millions of Dollars of earmarks.

McCain objection to earmarks hasn't stopped his running mate from asking for nearly $200,000,000 in earmarks in this year alone:

So what you're saying is you're splitting hairs about Obama so you can fabricate as many excuses as you can to not vote for him, attempting in your fabrication to spread your dislike for him to the country at large.

Got it.

If my intent were to spread dislike for Obama to the country at large, I wouldn't do it in the politics corner of a gay porn site.

Uh huh. Very sharp there, Sherlock.

And saying that is the way you give everyone a false impression -- which is called lying.
McCain lies so often it's pathological. And about the only time he's been called on it was on The View.

You're really straining to defend this statist -- one has to wonder why.
