Self Defense For LGBT

Unless he takes it away from you before you know he's there. Martial arts training can't be taken and used against you.

Unless your opponent is also a martial arts expert, and is physically much superior to you. A gun is an equalizer, and you don't have to make physical contact to use it.

Don't take this the wrong way. I got nothing against martial arts. It's a great thing to know, teaches discipline, and physical conditioning. In a really desperate situation, I'd rather have a firearm.

most bashers would be surprised by resistance, giving you more leverage.

I remember a bad streak of bashing in 1990's, and some carried whistles.

and common sense - once, around the same time (90's) this real cute guy cruised me, but an alarm went off in my head. I have no idea what would have happened, but bashers sometimes try to pick guys up, even in bars.

keep your eyes and mind open

Screw self defense. Know ur enemy and remember their are more hetero's than homosexuals. Just remember that U are not the hottest thing on Earth and their are men who only pretend to show interest in U, just to hurt U. If anything, keep the mind open, but heart and hormones closed.

I thought Oz was New Zealand. You learn something new everyday.

I think self-defense is a good idea. I understand the firearm idea as well. I've often wondered if I could actually shoot someone if I had to. It's easy to think you could, but perhaps the reality is different.

diamondstar, I think the majority of guys that hit on you are not bashers.

An armed society is a polite society.

My professor just went to Yaman and there, every guy carries a small tribal knife everywhere they go. It's not sharp enough to gut heads, but at least they can pierce anyone [strike]they don't like[/strike] [strike]they hate[/strike] who dares to attack them.

The idea's pretty [strike]genius[/strike] catchy, y'know

Anyone ever take Krav Maga classes? They're being offered at one of the gyms in my neighbourhood. Not cheap though.

Also, I heartily recommend firearms training if you live in a gun-toting society. It will make you feel like a big man.

Strength in numbers.

So, always travel with a posse if you're not into orgies. Why do you think rappers have 10+ guys following them?

Either that or a can of pepper spray

No, not EITHER that. Any kind of weapon can be and will be used against you if you fail at handling it. Pepper spray is only good if you can pull it pre-emptively - and if you are too late the attacker will get a hold of it if you cannot defend yourself.
Same for knifes or the electro-shocking things. they are awesome against physically superior attackers, but first you need the room and time to use them. and most of the time you will only be able to get that through basic self-defense.

is this the gay version of "with a skirt like that, she was asking for it"?

And don't forget - if you do get bashed, know what to do AFTER.

I think it would be helpful if you gave us the rundown. All I can think of is "go to the police," and that only works in an area like mine, where the police are on your side as far as bashing goes.

I can't give you a run-down, because it has to be location-specific. For example, do you have a hate crimes or bias crimes unit in your city? What is the city's track record with hate crimes? If you do not need an ambulance, are you better off calling the hate crimes unit directly, or can you count on good response calling 911 (i.e. the responding cops won't be homophobic)?

That's a pretty good rundown, actually. Things to consider, and a process for deciding what to do.

I guess. I'm lucky enough to live somewhere knowing I can just call 911 and leave it at that.

I'm also pragmatic enough to keep the number of the local gay paper handy if I need media help ;-)

When the victimization of women became a visual problem, there began to be a movement to get women in self-defense courses and to "stop being a victim." Maybe it'd be a good idea to have something similar at LGBT centers?

PLUS, it's a great way to get in shape, anyway.

So you want to be put in the same category as beaten and battered women. Thats kind of sad. The reason WOMEN are trained to defend them selves in certain situations is kind of obvious. But i don't see why a...I wont finish that.. The more and more i look around these forums i can tell that many of you have probably never been in a real fight or (potentially) life threatening situation, and when you guys are put in these situations (which come suddenly in life) you guys are more than likely to curl up and fold.

I'd rather use a taser. It's like a form of torture.
My 68yo aunt walks around with a taser for protection. No. Never.
However, when she first got it i had her try it out on me twice.. It was indeed effective. But not practical because in some situations your attacker will almost always have the element of surprise.

You keep saying "you guys." Wanna unpack that? You appear to have contempt for the guys on these forums. Why are you here?

I swear to god i just replied to this, and it was good to. You goin have to wait. .....Your avatar is disturbing. Its some creepy shit

Either this is bullshit, or you and your aunt are fucked in the head.

It was 100% my bone headed idea (as if you've never had any). Ive never felt one before (i was around 16-17) and i thought they were a complete joke....Well, you draw the conclusion.
