The news made headlines around the world - the wreck of RMS Titanic was found by a joint French-American expedition, with the main wreck located 2 September 1985 (the debris field located the day before, 1 September 1985). Robert Ballard, head on the American team, was truly stunned by the speed, and greed, of "entrepreneurs" to cash-in on the wreck of the Titanic.

From the CBS News archives:

In 2018, Titanic Belfast, Titanic Foundation Ltd., and the Northern Ireland National Museums jointly considered commissioning a fleet of submersible drones equipped with ultra-high resolution cameras to canvas the Titanic wreck and create a film documentary suitable for screening to paying customers at the Titanic Belfast visitors theater. Thus allowing scheduled showings of video tours to the Titanic wreck from the safety and comfort of the Visitors Center. No one would need placing lives in danger just to get a close-up look at the Titanic.

Since OceanGate, I have not heard of any new plans for Titanic.

I recently read about another billionaire who was looking at taking a submersible down to explore.

Here's why I spent Labor Day fuming in anger.

We have robots that send pictures from the surface of Venus. The Martian rovers send data reliably for years in the presence of minimal atmospheric pressure.
The Titanic wreck is so far down in the Atlantic ocean it may as well be on an alien planet. I'm angry that the Titanic continues to take lives into the 21st century.

The 2023 full-sized digital scan of the Titanic wreck by the Magellan mapping expedition in partnership with Atlantic Productions verified what my history teacher taught me in 1972:

Titanic did not suffer a lateral gouge along her starboard flank, the Titanic actually overrode a submerged section of the iceberg ripping the floor of the hull, like a ship grounding on a submerged island.
