September 2024 - Retirement at age 67

When I retired, it did take several days for me to get used to the idea that i could get out of bed whenever I wanted too.

A few people that knew me well, knew that from the time I was 15 until I retired I never had a period of time that I was unemployed. A handful of friends and co-workers told me i would be looking for a job within 6 months in order to have something to do. I proved them wrong. I went a whole 9 months before I got a part time job. I was at the point that I felt like I wasn't a productive member of society just sitting at home collecting my pension.

Enjoy retirement WHILE YOU STILL CAN (healthwise)!!

It's been 13 months since I've worked. I get emails with job offers from Indeed, and only one actually caught my interest. It was about working with a vegan festival. I'm not vegan but have no trouble with the food or the people. And such a short-term job might have been fun and profitable.

I have an online SSA account with customer service contacts I can use should I decide to work again during my retirement. It looks like the IRS has different forms for retirees who return to work based on hours of service and/or wages earned. Should I return to work and my pay is high enough, the SSA can suspend my payouts, and in some cases, ask for previous payouts be refunded back to SSA.

Great job on lasting through it all! I remember as a kid when we all thought the old folk were crazy for working until they were 65 - "No way in hell will I work until I am that old". Now I regularly see people well into their 70's at McDonald's and department stores.

Enjoy your days - and if you do go back to work keep an eye on that SSA figure - I had a friend who retired and went back to work part time and after a year and a half got a notice from Social Security that he needed to replay them almost $10K!

Thank you!

I've had a pleasant email exchange with my SSA customer service rep, and she assured me that by staying in touch with her if my circumstances change, I'll be just fine.

(betcha they say that to everyone who gets a repayment notice) 😂

You will love retirement. It takes a long time to sink in that you're truly retired and to stop feeling like you're on an extended vacation.
My retirement has never felt like "an extended vacation", it feels much more like being medieval peasant. I work longer hours now just taking car of the place than I did before I inherited this house, but I can't afford anything else so here I slave.
