Seriously considering disconnecting my phone line.

I have a question,
Can you cancel your phone service and keep your DSL? it's not like their ripping the physical line out of the wall or anything, do i need to be able to place calls and hear a dialtone to receive my DSL signal? cuz really, home phone is fifty, cell phone is fifty, one has to die.
