I've actually thought about that before. But since i don't know anyone who's been in a coma, then i have no answer. Good question though!

I'm no doctor but I think it depends on what area or areas of the brain are affected. Amnesia does not necessarily mean you don't remember everything. There are degrees of partial amnesia. In the example you state, if he has total amnesia I don't know how it would affect his memory of being gay or whatever. Much about sex is "mental" and that means the brain.

He might forget that he came out, and might even forget that he's gay. But I'd put that in the same category as forgeting he's left-handed. Once he started moving around again, I think it'd become pretty clear.

I'd guess that his subconscious mind would effectively cause him to be attracted to other men. It is very likely, however, for him to be attracted to women even if his family, friends, boyfriend, or partner told him and showed him otherwise. Essentially he'd be very torn in that case and would probably wish to be distanced from them until he decides for himself what feels right.

It can go either way for said amnesiac until he gets his memory back or is given enough stimulus to encite a positive or negative reaction towards the situation.

When you get into the point of "instincts" then you tread on very thin ice. From what I remember there isn't really anything regarding homosexuality that can be scientifically connected to instinctual behavior. It's all just work-in-progress theories at this point.

Just my two cents. Hope it sparks further discussion. ..|

If it's true that parts of the gay-male brain more resemble those of straight women than straight men, he'd be gay, whether an amnesiac or not.

Something I was wondering about on that, I'm sorry its gonna kinda get off topic for a moment. But I read an article about this thing called Chimeric twins. Its where a person is bor with a portion of a "twin" inside him(or her)self. Like a guy born with a portion of a uterus and such. Could the brain portions that resemble a female brain actually not be just this kind of thing? Not that it matters, one way or the other, I'm just curious about it.

As far as the amnesia situation, I think he would relive his original confusion about his sexuality.

I've heard of brain trauma affecting personality. You go in a lovable life of the party and come out a major douche but I don't think (generally) it will change your sexual orientation.
If that were true, wouldn't the reverse happen? Straight homophobe gets knocked unconscious and then wakes up from his coma wanting to do the male intern? (or maybe that's a short story that needs to be written).

All things being equal, he would wake up and still be attracted to men. Depending on the form and extent of the amnesia, he wouldn't remember the previous relationships or hookups or whatnot. But, I don't know of any instances in the psychiatric literature in which a bump on the noggin and/or resulting amnesia caused a change in sexual orientation--from gay to straight, or from straight to gay.

That was mu point. He will still be gay, but might not remember being gay, and would therefore most likely suffer the confusion once again.

I'm just thinking - the poor guy - just make sure he has male nurses.

I can't see it would change him - like Docinaustin - straight guys coming out of amnesia don't "turn" gay.

Let's turn the tables here: if a straight man has has amnesia - would he remember he's straight for suddenly find himself attracted to men

I honestly think he'd still be gay

My last "love" was in a coma for 3 months, after being shot 3 times and left to die on the rail road tracks. He laid there for 3 days before he was found. No one thought he would live. He pulled through, woke up, not knowing who he was, or any of his past. In time it all came back to him, including his desire for men, over women. Our relationship lasted for 3 days, and no I didn't get laid. That was going to happen the next week end he came over. On the 3rd day of our relationship, he died of a heart attack.
