So I have this friend who's mother had breast cancer. Her mother is fine now. You really can't tell at all. She's insisted on showing me her tit to prove it. The weirdness is a whole other topic. But of course my friend has become an advocate of breast cancer awareness. Who wouldn't if you grew up with that kind of horror?

The thing is I also know three different people who've been afflicted with prostate cancer. So when my friend was doing her weekly tirade about breast cancer I brought up prostate cancer and had literally dozens of women ranting at me about how I was trivializing everyone who's died of breast cancer. So I did a little research and what I've found is that 1 and 6 men develop prostate cancer and 1 and 8 women develop breast cancer.

The problem I have with that is that govermental funding for breast cancer is well over double that of prostate cancer. Not only that, but from what I've seen from the research done online, the funding from charities for breast cancer is almost 400% more than prostate cancer.

Knowing how level headed and logical women are, I brought these statistics up when my friend was doing her latest round of "wear a pink ribbon or you're a nazi" campaign. And rather than actually take in these facts I had my friend and dozens of other random women who I don't even know basically calling me a sexist prick.

I can see how if someone is speaking out against breast cancer is sexist. It's kind of a stretch, but I can see it. But to point out a more deadly form of cancer that only effects men, that's not sexist, those are just facts.

I've learned in life that it's next to impossible to win an argument with a woman, so I don't even try. For the record though, I don't think you're a sexist prick. You just care about pricks more than you do titties. (JK)

It's just frustrating, because there really is no better champ for women's right than me.

I watch Buffy daily.

But I don't stand for hypocrosy.

Both are serious diseases, and so mutual compassion and interest is called for. Please may people give lots to research for both.

This is not a case of either or, but inclusion.

Shep+*|*

My mum had breast cancer last year (she is in remission)
My dad will have his prostate removed next week, because of cancer (hence my avatar)

One cancer does not demean the other, when both your parents are afflicted by it, trust me!

What is the point in charities and funding for different types of cancer? Why can't all cancer victims play nice and care about all types of cancer instead of only caring about which one affected them?

Your friends sound like total dickfaces. Anyway men can get breast cancer too right so how is it sexist?

hmm. i kinda wonder wether your perspective here is the whole truth. it sounds a little like you got tired of her "weekly tirades", and that resentment might have made you come across like a prick. why even bring up another kind of deadly disease when your friend is raising awareness for breast-cancer? "yeah, i know, your mom almost died of a terrible disease. but there are other, more common diseases, too! here, the statistics prove it!" i can see how that might come across as disrespectful. there are countless terrible things happening in the world - breast cancer, prostate cancer, aids, animal testing, child labor, human trafficing, etc - so why bring up another thing if somebody is raising awareness for one thing? the things we pick out to raise awareness about might be a little random, but its still a good thing to raise awareness, beyond "bad things are happening, y'all!"

from what i read here, i wouldnt say kenny is a sexist... but you are.

Oh my God. I can't even begin to imagine what that must be like for you.

I'm usually not geniune online, but I really do wish your both your parents health.

Honestly I don't know enough about what separates the different forms of cancer to be able to speak blindly on it. But what you said was basically my point.
It's become pretty much a daily thing where this friend of mine will show me a video related to breast cancer. And in my town she's become pretty much the spokeswoman for breast cancer. I really do think it's great, and I really believe that she's done a lot of good.

My issue lies in that prostate cancer kills more people per year, doesn't get near the amount of awarness that breast cancer gets, or the money. And the one time I bring it up, I have literally dozens of women calling me sexist, and an asshole, and a piece of shit, and a prick and a...the list goes on.

I wasn't trying to trivialize breast cancer, I was just stating facts about what I believe to be a hypocrisy.

You know, to be honest I have for a while had thoughts of resentment and general apathy for the issue since it had become such a regular issue. And I can't say that, that apathy didn't inspire some annoyance when it came to the issue of this one person that I know who suffered through breast cancer and these three people I know that were afflicted with prostate cancer. In the aspect of me doing the research I may have done it out of annoyance and I admit that.

But after I really started getting the facts, I was as outraged as I get. I know that a very small percentage of men get breast cancer, but the only reason I can see for this blatant favoritism is based upon sex. The facts are simple, more men get prostate cancer than women get breast cancer. But the funding and awareness is inanely much more to breast cancer than it is to prostate cancer. 400%. Seriously, take a second to think about that.
Forget gender, if this were any other situation people would be so offended that they would storm the White House. 400%.

As far as what you said about me bringing up a different disease while the topic was about breast cancer. Well that was one of my points. Breast cancer gets pink ribbons and Cambels soup labels and telethons. What does prostate cancer get besides jokes about dr's fingering guys?

Of course I'm sexist. I've always preferred men over women. ;)

Lighten up.
