So I talked to my ma today, and apparently yesterday she had left her cell phone at work so she took my little sister's blackberry to make a call. My mom being terrible with phones, she was trying to figure it out and stumbled upon a text my little sister sent to her boyfriend...a text with a topless picture. My little sister is only 18 and a senior in high school, and my parents and I are absolutely furious with her. Luckily for my little sister, her boyfriend is a very good guy and he deleted the picture from his phone when he just as easily could have sent that around to all of his little friends. I just don't get the whole sexting thing...especially with young girls and their fascination with potentially ruining their reputations and putting themselves out their in such a negative way. I was especially shocked with my sister, since she is a very smart girl. I don't think I'm naive or anything, I mean I was sexually active when I was a senior in high school, but I never would have texted a naked picture of myself to a guy I was dating. Once you send something like that, it's out of your control and it could end up disastrous if it ends up in the wrong hands. And I know sexting has become sort of a big problem, especially in high schools. Any thoughts on the whole sexting phenomenon?

I think it's okay if you have complete trust on the person you're sending the pictures to. Or your sister was just being a horny high school girl? lol

I have my fair share of people sexting me but I delete the pictures because I respect them, even in their moments of horniness.

It's the age of the Internet and Google.

There is no privacy anymore.

I think it's okay if you have complete trust on the person you're sending the pictures to.

That's all fine and dandy until things 'go south' and relationships break up. Then private pictures get spread around and everybody knows somebody's 'business'.

Many young teenagers think their 'love' is forever. For them, 'forever' is only about a week and a half, and they they're humiliated and ridiculed for who knows how long.

Sexting is good for educating people about trust and stupidity. Life lessons are learned the hard way, so let the idiots create a trail of their naivety. Sooner or later they will regret it and learn.

It is happening in Australia as well.

only problem is that here, it has been occurring regularly between teens in school - ie under 18.

Apart from all the previously mentioned problems, kids here are now discovering that, if they send/pass these images/phone vids around - they are liable to be prosecuted for producing &/or distributing underage pornography.

Ouch.

Same in the US. On the Today show a few weeks ago, they showed some teenager who was prosecute under child pornography laws for distributing photos of his (ex?) girlfriend.

Yes, it was a mistake.

But child pornography it ain't.

In most (if not all) jurisdictions, child pornography charges may be laid against those creating, disseminating or possessing nude or sexually provocative pictures or videos of subjects who are under the age of 18.

The law does not discriminate based upon the age of sender and receiver, nor does it distinguish between dissemination to complete strangers, or to those known to the subject and/or sender. It is also not possible for the under-18 subject to consent.

In Australia, there was a huge row following the artist Bill Henson having an exhibition which contained some nude photographs of children under the age of 18. It raised huge debate regarding the nature of art, and where the line should be drawn between art and child porn.

Yeah, it's so weird that you can't post pictures of yourself when you were a kid here. Another casualty of stupid laws.

I don't understand the fascination with sexting, either.

I've done it a few times. It's just not my thing.

The law here in Texas is a bit different.

17 is the legal age of consent.
So you can be 17 and have legally have a sexual partner older then you.

My friend has a 14 year old daughter and caught her doing this. Young boys were sending her hard dick pics and my friend was in shock and sent them to me to show me what her daughter was up to. I told her don't send them to me that's child porn!! LOL. I deleted that shit quick. This issue has recently come up again with her daughter. I do sexting to be honest. Anyone wanna do it let me know, lol. Just playing, unless you are a sexy mofo. Than send me a pic!!! ;) But I am an adult and it really is safer than hooking up. It's like the real true phone sex.

^ Even as an adult, though, you don't know where he's going to post those photos.

Parents *allow* shit like this by giving their kids these devices in the first place.

For the life of me, I can't find the point of law where it is written that kids are required to have cellphones or blackberries.

Deb.

Personally, I find sexting to be good when you're apart from a special someone (or just someone) and want to send them a treat. I don't really care if the pics get sent around because I never include my face (that's just dumb). Though, certain circumstances change would change my mind. It all depends on who you sext

My feelings exactly. Parents buy these things for their kids so their kids can keep in touch with them.

That's usually the last thing kids do with their phones.

Theres a show off thread here on JUB does anyone ever say
"omg you are hurting your reputation, don't take naked pics!"

I don't see the big deal.

Some people are comfortable with nudity and their body. There just a big fascination with people stealing and searching for these images.

I don't see the big deal.

It's not a big deal when it's adults exchanging photos and such. However, if you bothered to read the news occasionally, you would know that there have been suicides as a result of sexting when relationships break up and the photos are share maliciously.

It becomes a big deal when people end up dead because of it.

Age of consent to engage in sexual activities is different. Most Australian jurisdictions have the age of consent as 16 (subject to some exceptions).

The consent I was referring to was consenting to having their nude/sexual photographs/videos distributed.
