This is perhaps my third or fourth post on shaving.

I can't stop getting ingrown hairs. Like WTF is up with it? I presume they are ingrown hairs — razor bumps. My shaft is as smooth as can, no razor burn, until the hair starts to grow back. I then get these small bumps, quite small, with pustules. On my shaft they are visible, and itchy -- uncomfortable. I get them on my perineum as well, but you can't see them at all. They are however easily 'felt', and they are quite uncomfortable also.

Does everyone else just live with them? The people who shave, I mean? I know you can't gage everything from porn stars, but they do not seem to get them. Sometimes you see them the odd time, but most of the time they are smooth.

I shave in the shower, with shaving foam that is 'moisturizing' and contains aloe vera. I use a Gillette Fusion Power shaver as well. A lot of people seem to use it and report no problems. Is it because I have younger skin or something (18)? And I don't have to push down hard. I just glide over the skin and I'm really smooth coming out.

The bumps then develop about a day later. And they then take a couple of days to disappear.

It's depressing.

Can someone give me a detailed shaving technique please? As in when they exfoliate, how they shave, what they use, and what the result is, etc.

It would mean a lot.

Thanks,
DP.

Here's the routine that works for me.

Day 1: Shave and then apply Nivea aftershave balm or jojoba oil on the shaved areas
Day 2: Exfoliate in the shower and then apply lotions
Day 3: Exfoliate some more and use more lotions afterward
Day 4: Usually doesn't require any further fuss

In all honesty, the exfoliating is the key to reduce the irritation. Get a loofa or one of those poofs and scrub away. It's not the best feeling but it helps keep your bits smooth.

There's really two problems here- folliculitis and ingrown hairs.

The folliculitis is caused by small scraps that happen when the razor knicks your skin and allows bacteria to enter the break in the skin. This causes something very similar to acne. You can try using an antibacterial wash and friction from a washcloth or loofah before and after shaving to see if that helps.

Ingrown hairs are more of a challenge. Some guys have a natural tendency toward them- particularly guys with curly thick hair.

But it may be that shaving is the issue. Clippering and waxing tend to cause less folliculitis and ingrown hairs. You may need to switch from shaving.

make sure you are shaving WITH the grain not against it. try to go over the area one time. twice max. use as little pressure as possible.

I've been shaving my shaft, balls and butt for years. I still get them occasionally but a lot less frequently after trying the above.

good luck. let us know how it's going.

I shave my armpits and perineum in the shower. After lathering up, I use an antibacterial soap, I use a disposible-twin-blade razor prior to rinsing off.

I dry shave my scrotum able once or so per month with a disposible-twin-blade razor.

I use an electric razor on my pubes.

For large areas like my legs, I use Nair.

Does anyone agree with this?
