Can someone tell me what it means to be able to sing?

Alot of times a new artist comes on the scene or even established artists (Madonna) and people always say, "She can't sing."

What does that mean?

Most recently i adore, "Hung Up" and "Sorry" those songs are damn good. Yet people say she cant sing. She sounds good to me. Ray Of Light album was awesome , "Frozen" anyone?

I am just using Madonna as an example.

So tell me what it means to sing, since so many of you seem to be experts.
 
being able to sing means using proper singing techniques such as singing while using your stomach rather than your throat for vocal support, having control of your voice, being able to control your pitch......people say that artist like madonna can't sing because whenever they perform live they always use a backtrack......if they were really good singers they wouldnt have to use a backtrack......take for example jill scott.....if you see her perform live she's sounds as good as she does on her cd's. and no, madonna can't sing.....i would hate to be maddona record producer....can you imagine how many times they would have to re-record things just because she's not a good singer? =/ people like madonna and britney spears sing from their throats....which makes them sound like shit.
 
I agree I think it sucks when "dance" artists or other artists who use lots of beats in a few of their songs are considered "bad vocalists." It all depends on whether the person can sing live and sing well. I guess it really depends on whoever is doing the critiquing.......everyone has their own standards......

](*,) im sorry but i have to disagree. i think there's a standard on vocal abilities that classify someone as a good singer........having a crap load of beats in a song has nothing to do with the artist sing ability.....take beyonce for example......excellent singer, many beats, flashy dance moves.....but still a top notch singer. ;)
 
Yeah that's what I was saying. Some people say Madonna can't sing or even Christina because sometimes they hire A-list producers for their beats and give them shit for not doing a ballad for every track on their album or whatever......
I do believe though that a true sign of an amazing singer is someone who can sing Live. It's okay to use a back track sometimes I guess, but if you can't sing with just you and a piano or a guitar then you're not very good.

i totally agree with you about the whole being able to sing live.....ive always considered christina to be an amazing singer.....as for christina hiring A-list producers....she probably just want to make hits.....but if you listen to christinas cd, she does most of her background vocals, which is another sign of a good singer because that shows that they inderstand harmonies and how they work.....as opposed to brittney and madonna, and lindsay, hilary, paris who have their background vocals done by a simulator.:grrr:
 
so can cassie sing? she's so, so foxy and i love her new one "long way to go". in fact, i'm listening to it now but i can't figure out if she's got a good voice or not...actually the voice is kinda wafer thin...maybe she'll be in "dreamgirls II" xyboy, LOL.
 
Jethillsong Hey great point! I noticed too when I listened to Back to Basics three-thousand times LOL that she did every single vocal on the album which is quite incredible. People like Paris, Hilary & Ciara (bless their souls) I actually listen to a ton of their stuff and like it (I know...........) but lord their voices are looped three or four times over just to sound normal on the track. So sad.
 
I love Cassie's "Long Way To Go." Her voice fits well with her production I think but most people would not consider her a good singer. I wonder what a Cassie & Ciara duet will sound like (yikes!)

"Dreamgirls II"???? Cassie can play Deena's daughter and she can teach her how to be a backstabbing mic-hog!!!!

my friend my friend.....im sorry to break it to you....but if you go on youtube, there's a video of cassie performing me&u on 106th and park.....she sounds soooooooo horrible....cassie cannot sing. =/

yea they do loop their voices.....thats why i say that most good music isnt always the most popular......like there's amazing singers and bands out there that aren't as famous because mtv or the public dont show too much intrest in them :grrr: instead they'll listen to mindless shit like 'hollabak girk' or 'fergalicious' what the hell is a hollabak girl anyways?:confused:

honestly guys, i think good vocals only matter if you listen to a certain type of music...let's say show tunes, LOL. the kinda music i like, i don't care if their voices are looped around their ass and vagina a thousand times...i love hip-hop as well and there's actually nothing funnier than when a rapper tries to sing in-between the rhymes...nelly is a great example. he sucks balls. i know people are gonna lament the death of the singer but hey...it's progress. who cares.
