She can't sing

I say screw this thread, it doesn't matter how they do it or why as long as we are being entertained. That darn Gaga sure knows how to keep my attention. Everything is changing, for the better or worst. Film producers in the 50's would cringe by watching today's movies, but we love them just as how we love these skimpy looking broads who make catchy songs.

Nothing wrong with Kylie Minogue. Have you heard Confide In Me - album version and live?

This girl can sing.

Oh yes my girl Kylie can sing. I can't wait to get the Kylie: Live In New York album! Loved seeing her in Hollywood two months ago!!!!..|

What i am about to say will put a rest to the whole "she can't sing" thing.

A True vocalist does not need to dance and put on a show to sell concert tickets.

A true vocalist can stand in one spot all night, or sit by a piano or play a guitar and sell out arenas.

Why can they do this? because their voice is the star and they don't need distractions to keep people interested.

Thats all.

That's a matter of opinion. Michael Jackson was a great singer; he could have stood behind a micraphone, if he wanted, but he decided to be an entertainer. In today's music industry, having a voice is not enough.

Britney can't sing a lick, and I have been an avid Britney fan in the past (and I admit those were some great days), so I know all about her voice. She was never a singer, always an entertainer.

Like I've said, I'm not sure about now, but there are a couple of clips where she's sung live in the past and she actually did a great job. I never said that she was not an entertainer, but she did know how to sing.

She has never ever, never ever sung great.

This is the best Britney has ever sung, and it's not good, and certainly not great. I do love this song though.

I understand that you're trying to educate me, but when I say someone has sung great, it does not mean that he or she has to have this powerful voice or express himself/herself in a histrionic manner. Britney Spears has had some performances where she has sung live, and she stayed on pitch, which is great, for her.

Sometimes I really miss being a Britney fan. The good 'ol days when she was something worth being a fan of.

When I hear someone say that a person cannot sing, it usually means:

1) I do not like the person.

2) I do not like the person's voice.

3) The person does not have a rare or unique voice.

Personally, I look for the basics. Can the person carry a song? If yes, he or she can sing. Everyone's not going to have a voice that I like or that is rare, but that does not mean that they do not possess the talent to sing.
That's so true. I would also add

4) The person is hugely popular and I want to be different by not liking them.

Look, music is subjective. There are artists who I don't think can sing but who have songs I really love and there are artists who, even though they have no songs I like, I still think are amazing singers.

This is all about personal tastes. If you believe the person can sing then who cares what anyone else thinks? There's absolutely no reason why you should feel ashamed being a fan. It's pointless having one person who hates an artist, and another who loves the artist engaging in back and forth debate non-stop. Nobody's gonna win.

I tend to wonder whether we'll reach a stage where we have computers completely creating singing voices, thus eliminating the need for an actual performer. It'll be a huge cash cow for the recording industry but the general public may not like.

Artists who CAN sing:

1) Beyonce
2) Celine Dion
3) Christina Aguilera

Artists who CAN'T sing:

1) Britney Spears
2) Rihanna
3) Madonna
4) Ciara
5) Taylor Swift

But any non-singer can still have a good or hit song as long as the beat is hot and catchy. There is at least one song from all five non-singers on my list that I love because the song's music and/or lyrics are great. I love Overprotected (Britney Spears), Don't Stop the Music (Rihanna), Hung Up (Madonna), Work (Ciara), and Love Story (Taylor Swift); even though neither of these five artists can sing, I still like said songs because of the music and/or lyrics. At that point, the record producer and the songwriter are the real talent, not the artist.

Thank you for putting Taylor Swift in that list!!!

What happened to Tina Turner, Aretha Franklin, and many of the late and greats? Those were PURE talent.

It is to much about image these days more than music.

I am so glad Sade has come back, yes she has the looks but with the new music like the music she released before, you can clearly see that looks are merely the icing on the cake!

Madonna can mostly carry a tune but she isn't the best singer in the world. I don't know if this conversation is that important now since commercial appeal doesn't require you to really sing. Look at Britney Spears and Rihanna.

So, so true. It's all about image, on a commercial level, now-a-days. I could not imagine Aretha Franklin, Chaka Khan or Luther Vandross breaking into today's market, unless they were in their slim and trim mode...but fat Luther, Chaka or Aretha? No way.

I know I am being a little facetious with the statement above, but someone like Adele is going to struggle to sell out stadiums, even though she can actually sing.

I love Adele and, yep, she can actually sing. I think her popularity problem is due to the fact that her songs are too sophisticated for the Britney-Rihanna fans. While her size is an issue, I think she'd be more commercially viable like Kelly Clarkson if she sang more radio-friendly songs.

Yep, it's sad that the likes of the great Chaka Khan would not have a career had she debuted in 2009. Really sad state of affairs the music industry is at this point.

i don't really think technical talent makes up for lack of imagination of emotion.

Thom Yorke of Radiohead, for example.
couldn't sing in a choir for sure, but hot damn the guy can sing his heart out.

I completely agree. Some mediocre or thin-voiced singers make up for it with emotion and stage presence. A lot of the times the ones with big voices are simply overwrought on every song.

Just to make a clarification, Grammy's are not given to people for their ability to sing LIVE, but rather their final recorded product. Using awards for proof as someone's ability to sing properly LIVE is invalid.

The britneys and madonnas of the recording world put out very well produced and polished product.

Looking at who was awarded Grammies back when they were created until about the time Whitney Houston came about you had to have real talent to get one..Today while some do have talent but it is clear that is not all about talent anymore...

I wonder if Britney Spears for example would've been a star back in the 70's and 80's.

To those who say Madonna can't sing, yes, it's true she can't sing, and her voice sometimes is way out of pitch. She herself, even admit it. She's not a top notch singer. She even said that she'll be eliminated immediately if she auditioned for American Idol. But she worked hard to develop her voice to gain vocal recognition for her performance in Evita because she is really passionate about the role and the character. Though I myself find it not a really strong vocal performance for the film yet Eva Peron became more human, more like an ordinary woman with an extraordinary life when Madonna portrayed her. If I watch Ellen Paige's performance of Evita, I see the character of Evita more like an opera singer, not a political figure.
As for Madonna the entertainer? She is a TOP NOTCH PERFORMER! A performance artist of visual, sound, dance, beat, rhythm, stage, etc................. She uses all kinds of resources and marketing strategies, to express her art, good or bad, to entertain both for the enjoyment of the media and the public.
In truth, I would rather be entertained by someone who can do a lot of things on stage! Not just someone who stands and croon, belt out 8 octave vocal ranges, or just sway her hips and be flirty. A well-rounded performer can sing (even if it is not a good voice), dance, play a musical instrument, portray a character, sometimes preach, sometimes be funny, sometimes be melancholy, and she should show she's enjoying what she does and giving out her best to make her fans feel that the expensive ticket her fans bought is totally worth the buy!
Now all you Kylie Minogue, Beyonce, Rihanna, Britney Spears, Lady Gaga fans should know that they are just following what Madonna pioneered and let be known that they all respect her and admired her achievements!
My toast to the Queen!
