I am a big liberal and am NOT a racist.

Shirley Q Liquor is a funny woman.. she is a comedian i used to judge until I decided to give her a listen. I honestly thought she was offensive to the black community but I decided to lighten up.

Shirley Q Liquor does mp3s.. meaning skits that you listen to that range to average a minute and a half. 90 Seconds.

She lives in the projects with 19 kids and lives off of welfare and talks about her church and various issues going on in the world.. its just really funny. She drives a 1972 beat up Cadillac and her daily meals consist of KFC and Kool-Aid.

One skit she talked about being dipped in butter by Barry White and the police wake her up on the door to say that alcohol and 3 kids were involved with a drug dealer on 3rd avenue and Crack Road. Shirley screamed "where the hell iz they mama why wasn't she watchin' them?!"

"Mam they're YOUR kids."

I uploaded about 16 skits for you all to listen too.. my personal favorites. Its 30 megabytes.

Like I said.. its humor.. i saw Dave Chapelle making the same remarks and i think hes great. Its laughing at life and just enjoying it a little. This made me crack up for days

I understand that Shirley Q Liquor has a lot of contention and controversy surrounding her and whether or not her act is offensive "blackface" but I haven't seen her show, so I wouldn't be able to truly judge if it is humorous or crossing the line of acceptability.

But Robert Downey Jr. seems to do an equivalently stereotyped blackface performance, so I wonder if the hullabaloo is just hullabaloo.

Ah yes, were you out picketing in front of the movie theater showing the movie "White Chicks"? Where was your "righteous indignation" at comedians such as Bernie Mac, Dave Chappelle, D.L. Hughley, and other who use white sterotypes in their act? Not to mention the actual hate mongers like Al Sharpton and Louis Farrakhan?

You go ahead and swing your double edged sword all you want... The truth is Charles Knipp based this character vaguely from a friend of his. And he also does an act as Ms. Betty Butterfield... A overly made up white woman in search of the perfect church for her spiritual needs.

His act is no more about hate than Dave Chappelle's act... It's called comedy. Grow a sense of humour and get off your high horse.

he does appear as a white woman, Betty Butterfield, which also plays up a stereotype of certain white women. many times he comes out as Betty as the opening act for Shirley. and i can laugh at stereotypes of everything. they do not represent any group as a whole. but, you always know somebody like them. hell, i laugh and make fun of myself every day. and it doesn't bother me when people laugh at me.

i love shows like Will and Grace, and Dave Chapelle, and Sarah Silverman, and Shirley Q Liquor.

Blacks have been slandered as a greedy race perpetually on the dole despite evidence demonstrating that poor blacks are no more likely to be on welfare assistance than poor whites. As a matter of fact whites receive almost twice as much in Social Security than blacks. The aim of Kipp's act - like all minstrelsy - is the dehumanization of blacks. Its easier to support libertarian, anti-social behavior like racial profiling, discrimination, privatization, labor-busting, for-profit healthcare, corporate pollution, mass imprisonment, unequal sentencing, predatory lending, neighborhood displacement, etc. when you don't view those being victimized as full humans. His act seethes with hatred of black appearance, culture, language, and social class. His character is an idiotic and negligent single parent, an obese and licentious alcoholic. Is this the stereotype of black women? Really? Even I underestimated just how little the power race thinks of black women.

I agree that Kipp is just a 'cog in the system' as you put it. He is a product of his environment - growing up in the segregated deep south shaped his view of blacks. He is just one part of a larger popular culture which devalues blacks (specifically in his case black single mothers) as biologically deficient leeches. Learning of his political background only confirmed what I had already deduced. I don't think analyzing his background should undermine my argument. According to the articles I've read his audience is mainly comprised of white gay men. That makes sense to me. White gays who have come out have lost some of their privilege. Its comforting to feel superior to another group if you have deep anxiety about your own social position.

Another major critique of mine is his character's utter lack of authenticity. Being familiar with African American Vernacular his affectation sounds alien to me. Liquor's accent reminds of me of the minstrel act Amos and Andy, at one time the most listened-to radio program in the US. Whites who have had limited or no contact with black Americans view his accent as an authentic parody but to my ear the similarity of Liquor's accent to AAVE is tenuous at best. He is simply not a good comedian. His character has no creativity or originality, its just a amalgamation of the very worst slanders against blacks. Any frat boy, redneck or racist queen could do what he does.

His white character is a cynical attempt appear balanced to his critics. Liquor is clearly the centerpiece of his act, and the reason people pay to see him.

I did not say Libertarians were arch-conservative, I said they were arch-right wing. I don't think the Libertarians I know would not oppose being called anti-social.

I sincerely hope that you are not getting your information about Libertarians from wikipedia. It is simply not a reliable source. Did you know that wikipedia's founder, Jim Wales, is in fact a Libertarian? Please read their ideological texts - works by Ayn Rand, Milton Friedman etc. They are misanthropes, an even more extreme version of Republicans. I was born and raised in Nevada, I know what arch-right wingers are like and the kind of social dysfunction their policies/behavior creates. They are unconcerned with the protection of minorities (including sexual minorities) they are vehemently anti-labor, against environmental protections and don't believe in any form of social safety net or socialized healthcare. In this context I think Kipp's political affiliations are very relevant.

That's a valid hypothesis, but again, it's only an assumption of motivation and not based on more than inference. Human behavior, motivation, and, if we want to throw it out there, human comedy is far more complex than how you've outlined. I'm certain you know that. My perspective is that you're overestimating his investment in the character.

As for white gays, perhaps that is a factor, but it's also another assumption to draw, seeing as white gays may reject typical white, heterosexual male negotiations of power. That makes for a very interesting sociological study. I may just make that my practicum...

pfan relax. Actually I grew up in a run down neighborhood and there are alot of blacks like shirley q liquor. But as i went to a private high school that was mostly black I realized the blacks I grew up with were like that due to lack of education and resources. Shirley Q Liquor Also shows that the reason many blacks are like that is because white people WANT them to stay like that. Its been hard for many black americans to grow up. If anything I feel Shirley Q Liquor allows us to laugh at stereotypes and have humour with life. I laugh at people making jokes towards the gay community and im gay. It's because I can take a joke and am not one to get all politically correct. Painting your face black does not mean you are degrading black people. Well he has to on stage if playing a black woman. It's an act.

Personally, I love Shirley Q. When I first heard the Ebonics Airlines skit, I kept pissing myself everytime I recalled it. Perfect tonic for those days when the sun forgets to shine!!!
