Shocking Cold Predicted for Maryland, USA

A nightmare temperature of 2°F (-17°C) is predicted for 6 am on March 4. I know some people from the Mid-West are going to chuckle, but this is record material here on the East Coast. I have never heard of such a temperature occurring this late, and the records do not show one. We already have bulbs pushing up. My poor tulips :( And people too. These are temperatures that kill unsuspecting people.

Does anyone know if my tulips are at risk, and what do do about it?

I'm late in the game, but recommend:

But he'd need booties to tip toe through the tulips this week.

I meant the ones covered in snow.

Maybe this will help.

I've never done either of those.

I figured Matt and company might could use some stress relief. This looked like it might fit the bill.

CO gets pretty cold in the mountains. I was looking at fruit tree tolerances for our area - in case I ever get some land and plant some dwarf trees - Zone 6 skips CO altogether, so 5 and 4 could get sketchy.
I'm in 6a thanks to Lake Ontario's moderating influence.
It's actually colder an hour south of us.

The Dutch cultivated tulips - on the North Sea.
Yep it gets really freezing in the mountains. Even where I'm at (fairly close to the mountains) I've seen it go below -20F... Pretty much always colder than the temps the TV news gives for those living in the city (Denver). For a tree here I deff wouldn't buy anything above a '4' LOL

Yeah, you wouldn't want to do it if they were more than just poking up and the snow was heavy -- then you cover them with straw first, to take the weight off the sprouts. But at such low temperatures the snow was very light, and froze together tightly so the weight was spread out.

My interest was what he'd have done if there'd been a heavy snowfall, more than just half a foot -- even arctic-dry snow weighs a lot if you pile up enough of it.
Wouldn've thought to use straw LOL
It would be interesting to know what he woulda done with say 2-feet LOL.

Last year in April we got a period of below zero - like into the neg-teens (quite unusual for that time of year, more like something you'd get in February) Tulips & stuff got totally frozen & either didn't flower that spring or were delayed late since they had to re-grow leaves/etc) very little fruit on trees too since the un-opened blossoms got frozen too.

I've never smacked a snowman.
I blasted one with a 12-gauge once, though.
LOL  good one . was there much of it left after that? LOL

Nope. :D
I blasted the middle, and the head just sort of tumbled down and landed looking face up.

It was more interesting to shoot holes in one using my Enfield. The first shot made a clean hole I could see through, so I gave him see-through "buttons".

If we're lucky enough for another round of snow, I should go to the dunes and make combination sand & snow castles, then "bombard" them.

Shocking cold is a drop from +44f to -54f in 24 hours. Maryland has no experience in this. Montana does!

One reason I like living near Lake Ontario - the moderating Heat Sink.
A little cooler in the Summer, but a little warmer in the Winter,
and a lot more moderating all year round.

This one make me think of what could be lyrics to a song... everybody sing along: " Blasting castles in the sand... "

Spring come quick afore our Kuli gets put in the slammer for multiple murders.
