Sadly, the story so far plainly points to the incident being yet another colossal failure of the mental health care system in the United States. From the smatterings of facts that have surfaced, he was being treated for mental illness.

On top of that, at some point the nation must accept the responsibility of creating mental illness via the wars and the damage done to the combatants. There is every implication that Mr. Santiago-Ruiz was not mentally ill before his year-long deployment in Iraq. War always takes its toll and it is deeply saddening to see a young man who is very much a casualty of our warmongering ethos.

How desperately sad for his victims, his family, his comrades, and himself.

As a personal footnote, I find it not surprising in the least that he had gone to live in Alaska.

I still find it awfully bizarre, though, that he flew four THOUSAND miles, on an expensive trip, simply to reach his destination and pull out his gun to start shooting STRANGERS. I mean, what's that all about?

There is no telling what will come out. Santiago-Ruiz had lived in Puerto Rico and New Jersey in addition to Alaska. From the description of him being involved in an argument during his flight, it might be possible that he dug out his gun and began shooting as a remedy for his argument with possibly another passenger.

The fact that he was mentally ill and not a terrorist means it is highly likely no one knows what was in his brain that led to the slaughter.

How very sad for all involved. Senseless killings.

With that premise, you have to be accountable for Justin Bieber.

Whereas Canada and the world does have a lower incidence of mass killings than the U.S. to be sure, Canada has them nonetheless, so the point should be that the frequency is scandalous, not the simple incidence, as Canada also is "to blame" for having them occur.

Canada's population is 1/10th of that of the U.S., so a more fair comparison would be to compare the incidence of mass shootings in California to Canada to get an even population level.

These pics are just screen grabs of Wikipedia's article on Canada's massacres. I'll admit that it includes an axe murderer, but that must be cold comfort, pun intended. Oh, and a stabbing and crossbow are in there too. Nice.

So, whatever it is in man that makes him go berserk, he goes berzerk whether in Canada or the U.S. The North is no stranger to massacres.

I'm sure that so many must be so disappointed that this mass killing was just another mentally ill person with guns...and not some carefully orchestrated lone wolf terrorist who would provide hours and hours of fun for them and the soon to be president.

It would have made a great diversion from the release of the security reports about Putin directing a complex, multi-layered campaign of hacking, misinformation and propaganda to help get his puppet elected.
