Shooting in Canada

I'm surprised no one has posted this.

Canadian police said late Wednesday that three Royal Canadian Mounted Police officers were killed and two others wounded in a shooting incident in Moncton, New Brunswick.

From what I can make out, this guy dressed up in camo and had two rifles and was reported walking around, and the RCMP officers were killed as the police hunted for him.

Gun control advocates stretch blame onto responsible and respectable gun owners and collectors, saying tragedies like this wouldn't happen if troubled young men didn't have access to firearms. Gun owners respond with indignation, saying the only thing they have in common with these young men is the device in their hands, and that if it wasn't a gun, it would have been something else. And it's true. A hobbyist isn't defined by those who use the focus of his hobby to cause pain and destruction, whether it be guns or model trains.

Otherwise...what can you say? A disturbed homeschooled boy from a large conservative religious family issues who had access to guns. So. Likely this: Mental health issues. Narrow education. Poor socialization skills. Old testamentarian views on justice. Rigid parental authority that he rebelled against. Parents who say they tried to get him mental health help. At least one friend who was a self-styled 'anarchist'.

Exactly the kind of person who would take out his impotent rage on the RCMP officers with a weapon he never would have needed and should never have had.

Apparently poetry wasn't on the home school curriculum.

This seems to have troubled him.

Too bad he didn't take the time to distinguish between riot gear versus on-the-beat gear or look at the actual history of police forces over the last century in responding to riots. It wasn't a riot squad who killed his friend while the latter was attempting to break into a car. It wasn't even likely the RCMP who stabbed his friend...but the case is still open, so maybe the investigation will be scrutinized more closely.

Sometimes we need to remember that behind every gun death statistic is a person.

There are times when I wish the early heresy that wanted to cut out all the judgmental stuff in the Old Testament had succeeded.

Sometimes we need to remember that behind every gun death statistic is a person.

Too often the only person we see is the one that should go nameless: the shooter. Media coverage gives that individual a larger-than-life reality, which can't help but serve to attract disturbed individuals to seeking the same.

He certainly could have received mental health care and support...but in Canada we have the same core obstacles as the US and many other countries. Unless the person wants therapeutic intervention and support, there is no way of forcing them to receive treatment...until they run afoul of the law and then it can be court ordered.

Which is the only way to do it in a free country. So the question is how to get people to want to go for help....

It lies in changing the mental health care paradigm and destigmatizing mental health conditions. So it is the longest uphill battle we probably face. But even over the last decade, I've seen huge advances in getting people to recognize the breadth of conditions, the possible genetic origins, the neuro-chemical physiological causes and the incidence of mental health issues in the general population.
