Hey Guys, I need some help. I want to buy a new Desktop but all I have is 1000.00 dollars to spend. I was thinking about getting a DELL because I have heard alot of nice things about them. Any tips for what I should look for? Im mostly gonna be using it as a game pc and for the internet. Any tips would be great. Thanks (*8*)

dont go with dell for a pc go to a local computer store and get them to build one for you it will give you heaps more bang for your buck

Core 2 duo is the best high end chip at the moment but they will tell you that

just ask them for advice you could get a cheaper cpu and get a better graphics card

comp usa had a really good deal for 800 bucks... it had core 2 duo 2gigs of ram hd-dvd drive i dont recall what video card it was i believe 7900 gt but im not sure, check them out.

i think a dell is fine. you should be able to get a very very nice computer for a $1,000 and i suspect you don't really even need to spend that much.

can you give us an idea of what you will be using it for? internet, new games, video editing, photo editing, word processing?

edit: opps, i see you did tell us what you are going to be using it for. let me look at dell. i'll post again in a bit.

/\ normally i would tell folks the same thing. But, i have found that when people do not own all the software they will need already (windows, office, etc) and they need free technical support then it is better for those people to just go with a name brand machine even though they end up with fewer choices on what goes into the computer.

Ok this is what i came up with for you. Click on the attached file once, then when that opens click on it again to make it a bit larger (so you can read it). the other guys here feel free to take a look at what i picked for him and make comments. It's a dual core AMD 3800+, 2 GB memory, 250 SATA hard drive, DVD rewritable drive, 256 MB nVidia card, with a 15" flat panel monitor.

Here are a few things to keep in mind. I don't know if you need/want a new monitor so i included a 15" LCD if you don't want it, that will save ya 100 bucks.

I did not go with Vista Home basic, because Home Premium was a free upgrade.

I added a separate video card since you said you game, if you want to use the onboard video card you can take off what I selected and it will save you 50 bucks. The onboard video is: NVIDIA GeForce 6150 LE Integrated Graphics GPU and the one i picked for you is: 256MB NVIDIA Geforce 7300LE TurboCache.

I added speakers, but if you don't need them that will take off 30 bucks.

I didn't add a floppy drive, if you need one that will add 30 bucks.

I didn't add a printer either.
Total Price $859
Price without monitor, speakers, and video card: $679

ok...i think that was all. ;)

GET A DELL!!! There is no way a local shop can beat the price of a Dell given the extreme volume Dell sells and the in-extreme volume a local place would sell. Keep your eye on their website for a few days, they have new sales all the time and you can get some REALLY good deals.

I'm going to throw in my vote with mike and Noelie, get a Dell... DON'T EVER EVER buy a PC in a store, it's all a ripoff there, trust me. If you don't have the time or knowledge to build your own, dell will be the best and cheapest route to go.

A few recommendations:
CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo (AMD CPUs can't compete with C2Ds right now)
Graphics: Something that will support Vista, Don't go with integrated graphics, Prefferably an nVidia 7600 or higher, or an ATi X1600 or higher
Memory: At least 2GB so you can stay current for a while

i tried to take him with the Intel Core 2 Duo, but every config i tried with that proc took me over the 1000 dollar mark. I agree though Intel procs with dual cores are out performing AMD's dual cores. I thought the 2 GB of ram was probably more important than intel vs amd...

ok edit: i managed to get a slower Core 2 Duo for under 1000 bucks, but not much less. ;) i got stuck with vista basic though, home premium wasn't an option today.

WOW dell have a good reputation  over there i am in shock
here all i have heard is horror stories about dell and their crappy customer service.

dell is the only company of its type still operating here all the others stopped a long time ago we used to have gateway i think there was more

but in general i try to support local stores and they are always cheaper than dell so why not

Well dell is based IN the U.S., they have a very good reputation here. I'm sure overseas they tend to faulter. But it's just the opposite of what you're saying over here, you want a dell, not a store bought PC, heh... We're backwards, what else is new eh?
